Hundreds of exceptional cartographic images are scattered throughout medieval and early modern Arabic, Persian, and Turkish manuscript collections. The plethora of copies created around the Islamic world over the course of eight centuries testifies to the enduring importance of these medieval visions for the Muslim cartographic imagination. With Medieval Islamic Maps, historian Karen C. Pinto brings us the first in-depth exploration of medieval Islamic cartography from the mid-tenth to the nineteenth century.

Pinto focuses on the distinct tradition of maps known collectively as the Book of Roads and Kingdoms (Kitab al-Masalik wa al-Mamalik, or KMMS), examining them from three distinct angles—iconography, context, and patronage. She untangles the history of the KMMS maps, traces their inception and evolution, and analyzes them to reveal the identities of their creators, painters, and patrons, as well as the vivid realities of the social and physical world they depicted.  In doing so, Pinto develops innovative techniques for approaching the visual record of Islamic history, explores how medieval Muslims perceived themselves and their world, and brings Middle Eastern maps into the forefront of the study of the history of cartography.

Synekdemos, a geographical text of Hierokles presents the administrative structure of the Eastern Roman Empire in the early 6th century AD. Six dioeceses (large administrative units), 64 eparchiai (provinces) and 920 poleis (cities) are registered in catalogues, in such a way that the political geography of the period becomes apparent. The critical edition by Honigmann (1939) displays maps without a geophysical background. This fact makes the study of the historical settlements network more difficult. In order to facilitate this study, maps of the 64 provinces have been created to describe and offer a clear overall view of the regional context. These maps follow historical topography as this appeared in Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World (2000). In addition, they support a database which classifies the settlements according to historical and geographical criteria. The first set of criteria is related to parameters and variables, such as the date of foundation, constant presence in five historical periods, ancient and modern toponyms. The second set is related to the location of the settlements, and uses parameters and variables, such as geomorphology, water elements, communication networks and presence of a nodal point or port. The province of Palaia Epeiros has been chosen as an example of the advantages that such a database has to offer. The combination of maps with a database improves the historical-geographical study of the settlements network, and accentuates the importance of Synecdemos as a basic geographical text of the period, α quality that has escaped the attention of the “official” History of Cartography (1987).""

This is an anthology on the current use in Denmark of historical maps within a large number of subject areas and topics. Each of the articles focus on one such area.

A quasi due anni dalla sua scomparsa, il Centro Italiano per gli Studi Storico-Geografici, con il contributo del Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell’Università Roma Tre e del Dipartimento di Studi Storici dell’Università di Torino, organizza a Roma un seminario dal titolo “Massimo Quaini e il Centro Italiano per gli Studi Storico-Geografici”.
L’incontro vuole ricordare lo studioso, l’amico, un collega e un riferimento per tutti coloro che si sono ritrovati e si ritrovano nel CISGE. Tra i fondatori del nostro centro, Massimo Quaini ha rappresentato una delle figure intellettualmente più vivaci e critiche della Geografia italiana e in particolare degli studi geostorici.
È sembrato doveroso e importante ripensare al contributo di Massimo Quaini restituendone un quadro articolato attraverso le quattro sessioni tematiche di cui il Centro si compone.
Il Seminario è rivolto in special modo ai giovani in formazione, ai dottorandi delle discipline geografiche e storiche che vogliano comprendere, da un particolare punto di vista, le vicende della nostra storia più recente.

"Few landscapes change more rapid than the marine. Sandbanks, channels and even complete coastlines can change dramatically overnight. This is a threat not only for modern mariners, our seafaring forefathers knew this problem also all too well. With modern techniques we can monitor these changes and adapt our maps on a regular basis. These techniques not only provide saver shipping, they can also be used to find the wreck of unfortunate former mariners. How can this method be used to predict where wrecks can be found. And, if a wreck is found, is it possible to preserve it?
In order to get a full picture of possible wreck sites, we need to know what the underwater landscape was in various periods, and how it has changed over time.
Historic Cartographical analysis can give and insight in the use and sometimes in the morphology of former landscapes. The problem with this is that it only provides qualitative information; i.e. descriptive data (map legends, interpretations, names or remarks). Modern remote-sensing devices give purely quantitative data. In order to model changes in landscape overtime, the historical qualitative data should be in some way ‘quantified’ to make calculations possible. If the historical records provide quantitative data as well, they should somehow be extrapolated to be comparable with modern high resolution data. This ‘quantifying’ of data can also be used for modern qualitative maps, such as soil type maps or land use maps.
This way historical data can be integrated with modern remote-sensing and survey techniques."

Engravings Depicting the Polotsk Campaign in 1579 as a Homogeneous Cartographic Composition Th e paper presents seven plans of fortresses (Polotsk, Sokil, Kazyany, Krasne, Turovla, Susza and Sitno) and a map of the principality of Polotsk by Stanisław Pachołowiecki. Th e analysis indicates that plans of fortifi cations and hydrogeologic conditions were integrated into a previously existing operational map of the principality of Polotsk. Th erefore, eight printed maps and plans constitute a joint work that was uniformly fi nished by one author (Stanisław Pachołowiecki or Giovanni Battista Cavalieri). Th e map of the principality of Polotsk features Russian fortifi ca-tions in the form of two-dimensional projections. Th e strongholds were depicted in a reliable manner, both in terms of shape and the number of towers. Such a representation of settlement symbols was an innovative solution in Renaissance carto g-raphy. Not until the 17 th century were such means known and they did not appear on a broader scale until the 1730s.

In 1587, the Milanese cartographer Urbano Monte wrote a treatise aiming to show the physical, geographical and ethnological features of the known world, as well as the historical facts that happened shortly before his time. In this work, the author included a planisphere, designed with a projection as seen from the North Pole. In this map, he represented a huge amount of information taken from a variety of historical, literary and cartographical sources. Among them, Monte included a textual and graphic representation of Phillip II of Spain and his control of the Atlantic Ocean. This depiction has a profound level of significance, which will be analysed in this article, as well as its sources and methods. Thus, our aim is to study and explain the role of the Hispanic Monarchy’s Atlantic expansion within the ideological and textual discourse of this map.

Sacred geography (geographia sacra) was a flourishing field of scholarship in the early modern period. Interest in new scientific or empirical methods for cartography was often combined with a historical-philological method that paid much attention to the study of geography in ancient texts, including the Bible. At the time, knowledge about the geography of biblical events was considered an important accomplishment for any scholar of the Bible.

The atlas of the Holy Land by Christiaan van Adrichem falls squarely within this category of sacred geography, as its title testifies: Theatre of the Holy Land, and of biblical histories, expressed with geographical copperplate engravings. The term theatrum is used metaphorically here: it refers to early modern ideas about the organization and communication of knowledge, and it often appears in book titles with this meaning. Adrichem’s Theatrum of the Holy Land thus aims to offer a systematically organized window on the historical geography of the Bible.

La miniera di Vallauria, situata nel territorio comunale di Tenda nelle Alpi Marittime francesi, è localizzata nella fascia di contatto tra lo zoccolo cristallino dell’Argentera-Mercantour e le peliti scistose di età permiana o le anatessiti precambriane.
La mineralizzazione si dispone in filoni lenticolari di due diverse tipologie: uno composto da galena argentifera estratta già dall’età del bronzo; l’altro da blenda ricca di composti zinciferi, sfruttato tra il 1892 e il 1930.
Il testo ripercorre la storia dei lavori eseguiti dalle origini fino alla chiusura della miniera, riportando dati riguardanti l'attività estrattiva e l'impatto occupazionale, con alcune planimetrie d'epoca.

The authors attempt to present the history of cartography of Polish cities from the 16th until the end of the 19th century. The oldest preserved city maps constitute the initial caesura and the cartographic
‘production’ accompanying the regulation of cities of the Kingdom of Poland after the so called city reform of 1869–1870 and W. Lindley’s first maps – constitutes the final caesura. Maps and plans stored in Polish
collections form the article’s source basis. The authors have also used source publications and catalogs of large scale maps of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and of cities which are currently included
within the boundaries of the Polish state.There have remained only few large scale 16th century maps. There exist individual copies, mainly
of large cities or of those which were strategically important and had fortifications. They were made in connection with urban processes and construction activity. Large scale maps were also made to settle
ownership rights and for fiscal reasons. G. Braun’s and F. Hogenberg’s plans and city views are among the most valuable works of urban cartography. However, the maps made during the 17th century and
the beginning of 18th century wars in Poland have higher recognize value. The most valuable among those are the works of a Swedish army engineer, general E. J. Dahlbergh. They were published in part
in the work of S. Pufendorf. Urban cartographic ‘production’ increased in the 18th century. During the reign of August II and August III, mainly two kinds of elaborations were made: 1) maps of Polish cities besieged during the wars fought at the beginning of the 18th century and 2) city
plans, mainly of Warsaw, made in connection with urban and construction activity of Saxons. Cartography, including large scale cartography, thrived during the reign of king Stanisław August Poniatowski. During that time, not only maps being the result of the king’s urban and construction activity were made, but also plans elaborated for such city institutions as the Paving Committee and the Boni Ordinis Committee. The authors of large scale city maps of Poland were the best contemporary cartographers and architects, such as P.R. de Tirregaille, A. Hiż, H. Jędrzejowski, M. Deutsch, J. Fontana and D. Merlini.The most numerous among the maps which have survived up to this day are the maps created in the 19th century. The partitioning states’ cartographic ‘production’ after the third partitioning of Poland
(1795) mainly concerned ownership and fiscal matters. In the period of the Duchy of Warsaw, city plans were mainly made in connection with fortification works conducted at the time. Urban cartography
grew most dynamically during the constitutional period of the Kingdom of Poland (1815–1830). In order to make large scale maps of Warsaw, knowledge and organizational potential of military topographic
services were used. In urban cartography, methods and models obligatorily used until the end of the 19th century were created. Also in the period of conducting regulation works which followed the implementation of the so called urban reform, many large scale
urban maps were created. In the history of Polish city cartography, the 19th century is concluded with cartographic works done in connection with the construction of water supply and sewer system in Warsaw.

One of the central questions in the history of cartography and navigation, the issue of the
prime meridian, with its strong implications for the most diverse aspects of our life, is far
from being just a matter of geography. Similarly, the choice of which of the numerous prime
meridians that were in use until the late nineteenth century would be selected as the
internationally recognized zero-degree point was not just a simple geographical decision.
It was also a matter of politics, economy, and power. However, this is a tale in which science
competed with local and national interests. The selection of a single meridian saved many
lives, standardized maps, including, most crucially, those used for navigation, united diverse
scientific communities, and provided a good base on which to regulate the measurement of
time and space.

Fra Mauro's world map was created in the middle of the 15th century and at that time it represented a great progress in relation to Ptolemy's geographical and cosmographic representations, which until then had been the starting point for every geographical discourse. This map is one of those epochal works from the era of Humanism and the Renaissance, which illuminated the world with new light and thus moved scientific thought forwards. Fra Mauro's map represented the affirmation of geography and cartography, which at that time had not yet been constituted as sciences, and directed at new geographical discoveries and research. The aim of this paper is to analyse the geographical representations of the Balkan Peninsula on Fra Mauro's map. The territories of Methoni (Modon) and Pylos (Navarino) were jointly administered by the Ottoman authorities from AD 1500 to 1686, when Venetian forces recaptured them. The Venetian authorities immediately undertook a programme of mapping, to which it is likely that this map, drawn by Francisco de Fabretti, dating between 1690 and 1700, belongs.

La frontière entre le royaume de France et les Pays-Bas autrichiens issue du traité d’Utrecht (1713) comporte de nombreuses anomalies,
résultant de la conception de la frontière à cette époque. Des « conférences des limites » ont lieu tout au long du XVIII e  siècle pour
tenter de rectifier ces anomalies.  En 1779, une convention rectifie la frontière, en particulier à La Flamengrie. Ce village avait été
rattaché à la France au traité de Nimègue (1678), tandis que le village voisin de Roisin restait aux Espagnols, ainsi que les bois que
les seigneurs de Roisin possédaient autour de La Flamengrie, coupant ainsi la liaison routière entre les places fortes de Valenciennes
et de Maubeuge. La convention de 1779 permet de remédier à ce problème. L’article met l’accent sur les aspects cartographiques de cet
épisode : représentation de la frontière, documents pour les conférences des limites, réalisation pratique de la rectification de frontière.
The border between the kingdom of  France and the Austrian Netherlands after the Treaty of  Utrecht (1713) contains many
anomalies, resulting from the concept of  border at that time. “Conferences about limits” are held throughout the eighteenth century in an
attempt to correct these anomalies. In 1779, an agreement rectifies the border, particularly in La Flamengrie. This village was annexed
to France by the Treaty of  Nijmegen (1678), while the nearby village of  Roisin remained to the Spaniards, as well as the woods that
the lords of  Roisin owned around La Flamengrie, thus cutting the road link between the fortresses of  Valenciennes and Maubeuge.
The 1779 Convention helps to remedy this problem. The article focuses on cartographic aspects of  this episode: representation of  the
border, documents for the conferences about limits, practical implementation of  the border rectification.

Dynamic post-contact Maori settlement patterns in Te Tau Ihu o te Waka a Maui (the northern South Island) are used to investigate agency and the role of emergent nineteenth century European population on Maori landscape use. The study has shown that the settlement pattern changes observed in the 1770 to 1830 period were due mainly to agency and internal cultural drivers of change rather than by forces external to Aotearoa New Zealand. The conceptual framework is informed by social archaeological theory drawn from international culture contact studies. A geographic information system (GIS) was used to aid the analysis of temporal and spatial data derived from historical maps and charts augmented with archaeological, historical and ethnographic information

Er zijn diverse landmeters geweest met de naam Verstralen. Ook de naam Verstraten kwam voor. Het is niet altijd duidelijk om wie het gaat.
Het is mogelijk dat er een familierelatie bestaat tussen de verschillende personen met dezelfde naam. Maar dat moet dan eerst aangetoond worden.
In deze publicatie is gezocht naar het genealogische verband tussen personen met de naam Verstralen in Utrecht.
Zo is de familie van Henrick Verstralen in kaart gebracht en wordt tevens een deel van zijn kartografisch werk besproken.

Toponymy appears in the whole Earth surface, and the activity of naming places, features and objects is intrinsic to history of mankind. It’s difficult to find a place or an object that does not have an assigned name. Through documents, maps or popular knowledge, the toponymy becomes institutionalized and becomes a referenced point in the space. The study of geographical names is a multidisciplinary study and its spatiality gives to Geography the possibility to creat, in this theme, subjects of study linked to other disciplines of knowledge. Facing the importance of the geographical names, this research developed an analysis on the toponyms of the streets of the Teresópolis urban district. The toponymic changes occurred in the city opens a large field of study where is possible to unravel the meanings, memories and cultural aspects that occurred there. The analysis begin in 1855 after the city foundation until the end of the 20th century. Several things of documents, and especially maps, were of inestimable importance to enable the spatial identification of the toponymy and the respective changes. Through different techniques of geoprocessing and scanning, were possible to access the research material, and perform the necessary procedures to aim the objectives proposed in the study. In the analysis of the toponymy of the streets, it was sought how memories and meanings of the names assignment, and as how the toponymic dynamics changed a textual landscape of the city. In addition, through the changes was possible to understand the relationship between the geographical names and spatial positioning, which changes means, memories and cultural aspects. The results show a clear message about the toponymic landscape of Teresópolis: the names was arranged in space in a given logic and in different ways. Many tributes to local and national politicians appears in the central areas of the cities, as well as other more distant points have another panorama of the names found. The numerous renames of streets and the creation of others in many moments was tied to the recognition of the political figures and more influential peoples of the Teresópolis city and Brazil.

Il terzo capitolo è dedicato ad un'approfondita descrizione della tecnologia GIS nella prima parte (caratteristiche, funzioni, ambiti d'applicazione e prospettive future) della cartografia numerica nella seconda parte (strutture e tipologie dei dati, tecniche di acquisizione e concetto di scala in cartografia numerica)

This research is a case study for the reconstruction of the “story elements” of archaeological landscape of the ancient city of Pompei. The aim is the realization of a descriptive summary of the archaeological “reveal” landscape, through the georeferencing and the vectorization of the ancient plans of Pompei, edit between the 1748 and the 1815 (Latapie, 1776; Piranesi, 1786; La Vega,1800-1809; D'Ancora, 1809; Murray-Cook, 1810); Miccolupo, 1811; Mazois, 1812; Russo, 1815) and the archaeological excavations. The plans have been included in a GIS (Geographical Information System). A list of 103 aerial photographs, taken between the 1910 and the 1999 (Genio Militare, Royal Air Force, Aeronautica Militare, SAF and Fotocielo), maintained by Aerofototeca Nazionale in Rome, was made in the interests of protection and knowledge of tangible and intangible landscape of historic memory. Also, the creation of a chronicle of structural collapses, between the 2003 and the 2017, has been useful for the enhancement of the archaeological site and the safety of the tourists.

A rare 19th-century map of Vietnam, little noted in the West, is receiving renewed attention in Vietnam. The map, published in 1838, is one of those being cited to support Vietnam’s claim to sovereignty over the Paracel Islands. However, its significance goes well beyond any evidentiary value in Vietnam’s current struggle with China over the Paracels. More broadly, the map is a striking fusion of traditional Vietnamese administrative cartography and Western mapping. It also offers a revealing snapshot of Indochina in the first decades of the 19th century, as the Nguyễn Dynasty consolidated its rule over a newly unified Vietnam and before French colonialism took hold later in the century.

This paper deals with the observation of settlements of German-speaking woodsmen so called Huncokars, in the Little Carpathians at a cartographic materials from the 18th to 19th century. The first part is focused on the characterization of surveyed area. The second part deals with the historico-geographical characteristics of huncokar settlements. The third part deals with the description of each cartographic materials and simultaneously on the identification of huncokar settlements that can be found on them. The main goal of my study is by the use of cartographic materials in the correlation with the written sources and secondary literature, determination of historical development of huncokar settlements during different centuries at the surveyed territory.

The fortress of Gaeta had a considerable strategic importance in Southern Italy. It was also the center of numerous historical events. For these reasons it was represented by a multiplicity of different types of cartographic and iconographic representations over the centuries. The representations of Gaeta and his fortress can be grouped into two large categories. One concerns views of the fortress as a part of the city of Gaeta, from a landscape perspective; the other concerns the description of military events. The vast series of "war representations" between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is particularly interesting. During this period Gaeta was besieged several times, culminating in its capitulation in 1861. After this date, the city became part of the Kingdom of Italy, leaving the Neapolitan dominion of the Bourbons. This contribution focuses on representations from the 1700s and 1800s, analysing and highlighting the differences in the representations of attack and defence, which at times are quite profound. In fact, maps of the city of Gaeta and its fortress developed in the same period are extremely different depending on whether they are representing a siege strategy or if their purpose is to map out the strenuous defence of acquired positions. - La fortezza di Gaeta ha avuto una notevole importanza strategica nella storia dell’Italia Meridionale ed è stata protagonista di molteplici vicende storiche. Questa centralità  trova riscontro in una multiforme tipologia di rappresentazioni. Queste, oltre alle riproduzioni tipicamente cartografiche, possono essere raggruppate in due grosse classi, seppur con una varia articolazione interna: una riguarda la fortezza come parte della città di Gaeta e del suo Golfo secondo un canone propriamente paesaggistico; l’altra riguarda la descrizione di particolari eventi militari. Particolarmente interessante è la vasta serie di “rappresentazioni di guerra” tra il XVIII e il XIX secolo, periodo in cui Gaeta fu più volte assediata e che culminerà con la sua capitolazione nel 1861. Dopo questa data la città passò definitivamente dal dominio dei Borboni di Napoli al Regno d’Italia. Questo contributo si focalizza sulle rappresentazioni del 700 e 800, analizzando ed evidenziando le differenze a volte profonde nelle rappresentazioni di attacco e di difesa. Infatti cartografie della città di Gaeta e della sua fortezza elaborate nello stesso periodo, risultano estremamente differenti se rappresentano una strategia di assedio e di attacco o se il loro fine è quello della strenua difesa di posizioni acquisite.

The e-book shows the results of the History and Design Studio of the Architecture English course at Politecnico di Torino. Práce se zabývá indikací a dokumentací historických cest v severozápadních Brdech pomocí nedestruktivních archeologických metod, zvláště lidarové prospekce, a historických map. Popisuje verifikaci indikovaných objektů ve dvou případových studiích. Zabývá se rovněž možností aplikace doposud publikovaných metodik pro potřeby výzkumu cest nižší kategorie lokálního charakteru.


Práce se umístila na prvním místě v kategorií vysokoškolských prací v soutěži Cena města Rokycany 2021.

In questo volume, sotto il titolo “Geostoria. Geostorie”, sono stati raccolti i contributi presentati qualche anno fa in due diversi incontri di studio organizzati dal Centro Italiano per gli Studi Storico-Geografici e dal Dipartimento di Studi Storici Geografici Antropologici dell’Università Roma Tre, a breve distanza di tempo l’uno dall’altro.
La scelta di unirli insieme, dettata essenzialmente da motivi pratici, si è rivelata utile anche da un punto di vista contenutistico, perché gli argomenti trattati nell’un caso e nell’altro si integrano e si completano utilmente a vicenda. Il primo convegno, infatti, dal titolo “Storie e geostorie. La storia delle esplorazioni come punto di incontro tra geografia, storia e altre storie. Esperienze di ricerca” (Roma, 15 e 16 marzo 2011) è in qualche modo la premessa del secondo: “Geostoria, Geostorie. Nel ventennale del Centro Italiano per gli Studi Storico-Geografici” (Roma, 4 e 5 dicembre 2012), che a sua volta ripropone, ampliandoli, alcuni temi del primo.
Così la raccolta finisce per raccontare una storia, quella di vent’anni di vita del Centro Italiano per gli Studi Storico-Geografici.

Riassunto Abstract La straordinaria potenza della struttura amministrativa della Dogana delle pecore di Foggia ha come corrispettivo un'enorme produzione di carte in cui si manifesta, nel corso dell'età moderna, il peso dello stato centrale e il suo interesse per la pratica della transumanza. In questo contesto i Regi Compassatori sono tecnici di eterogenea formazione, testimoni ed attori dell'importante disegno del territo-rio perseguito dall'istituzione doganale. Essi sono i maggiori fauto-ri di una geometrizzazione del territorio e al contempo gli autori dell'immagine di un importante frammento delle campagne dell'Ita-lia centro-meridionale tra '500 e '800. L'obiettivo del saggio è quello di approfondire la conoscenza di questo corpo, la cui attività è stata troppo spesso relegata ad una azione geometrica di " riduzione in quadro " per la mera misurazione. Tale approccio permette infatti una più approfondita lettura dei documenti da loro prodotti. The amazing power of the administrative structure of the sheep Cus-tomhouse of Foggia has as a consequence a huge production of maps witnessing the strong weight of the central state and its interest in the practice of transhumance. The Regi Compassatori's heterogeneous technical body are witnesses and actors of the important form of territory construction carried out by the Foggia institution. They are important authors of a geometrization of the territory and at the same time the protagonists of the creation of the image of an important fragment of the central and southern Italy countryside between '500 and' 800. The aim of the essay is to deepen the knowledge of this body, whose analysis were too often limited to a geometric action for the mere measurements. The proposed analysis allows a deeper reading of the documents that they produced.

"Archaeological sites comprise by definition the spatial substance, thus adding this factor to
their serious management problems. Moreover, its visual attribution requires the support of various
specialties, as well as the creative synthesis of miscellaneous data.
The case of the archaeological site of Nicopolis is a typical sample. The first complete map
designed exclusively for this extended site followed the appropriate methodology in order to take
advantage of all available data, aiming to cover a wide range of needs, not only of administrative
but also of promotional and utilitarian nature.

However, the general frame that define the cultural heritage (including the archaeological sites,
of course) a common property beyond national borders gets more and more strict. Thus, archaeological
sites are now being examined with a holistic view, as a field of interaction between various
elements which must be taken into account not only during research but also during documentation,
restoration and promotion procedures.
The specific mapping formed the basis for a later general proposal dealing with the idea of
transforming Nicopolis into an integrated archaeological park. Under this spectrum, contemporary
mapping of archaeological sites must comprise the end of a painful process for the exploitation of
any available information, and also produce valuable tools in order to cover the various needs of
the visitors."

La cartografía histórica se ha dedicado al estudio de la composición y relación de sentido del mundo físico que dota el ser humano sin embargo parece ser que en la Edad Media se rompe esta noción pues su el sentido geográfico no agota el sentido del mapa sólo hasta que se entiende como una relación anímica con la finitud de su existencia.
