Unlike other cancers, the Sentinel Lymph Node (SLN) procedure in bladder cancer requires special attention to the injection technique. The aim of this study was to assess feasibility and to optimize tracer injection technique for SLN mapping in bladder cancer patients using NIR fluorescence imaging. Twenty patients with invasive bladder cancer scheduled for radical cystectomy were prospectively enrolled. Indocyanine green (ICG) bound to human serum albumin (complex ICG:HSA; 500 µM) was injected peritumourally to permit SLN mapping. ICG:HSA was first administrated serosally (n = 5), and subsequently mucosally by cystoscopic injection (n = 15). In the last cohort of 12 patients treated with cystoscopic injection, the bladder was kept filled with saline for at least 15 min. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) regulate pathological processes, yet their potential roles in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) are poorly understood. To profile transcriptionally dysregulated lncRNAs in PTC and identify lncRNAs associated with clinicopathological characteristics. We performed RNA sequencing of 12 paired PTC tumors and matched noncancerous tissues and correlated the expression of lncRNAs with clinical parameters. Treatment of mice with hydroxyurea to selectively kill all cycling cells has been used to study population dynamics and life expectancy of “natural” immunoglobulin-secreting cells in the bone marrow and spleen of nonimmunized animals. The results show that 50 to 90% of those cells are eliminated 2 to 3 days after one cycle of hydroxyurea administration, demonstrating their recent origin from cycling precursors. Using a protocol of long-term hydroxyurea treatment which abrogates cell production from the cycling precursors compartments, it was shown that “natural” immunoglobulin-secreting cells have a very short half renewal time, in the range of 15–60 h.

The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy with technetium 99 (99mTc) and/or blue dye-enhanced lymphoscintigraphy in vulval cancer. Sensitive searches of databases were performed upto October 2013. Studies with at least 75% of women with FIGO stage IB or II vulval cancer evaluating SLN biopsy with 99mTc, blue dye or both with reference standard of inguinofemoral lymphadenectomy (IFL) or clinical follow-up were included. Meta-analyses were performed using Meta-Disc version 1.4. Of the 2950 references, 29 studies (1779 women) were included; most of them evaluated 99mTc combined with blue dye. Of these, 24 studies reported results for SLN followed by IFL, and 5 reported clinical follow-up only for SLN negatives. Pooling of all studies was inappropriate because of heterogeneity. This paper presents current knowledge about the structure and function of the lymphatic system. Mathematical models of lymph flow in the single lymphangion, the series of lymphangions, the lymph nodes, and the whole lymphatic system are considered. The main results and further perspectives are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate prospectively the sensitivity and specificity of scintimammography in the detection of both primary breast cancer and axillary lymph node involvement. Sixty-five consecutive women referred for a suspicious breast lesion on clinical examination and/or with abnormal mammographies suggestive of malignancies were studied with scintimammography using planar prone imaging (with a chest positioning device with semicircular lateral aperture on the imaging table) performed 15 min postinjection of 25-30 mCi 99mTc-sestamibi. Three planar views, right and left lateral prone and anterior supine thoracic views, were obtained (8-10 min/view). The entire breast and ipsilateral axillary region were included in the field of view. When treatment intent is to include breast and internal mammary lymph nodes (IMNs) in the clinical target volume (CTV), a significant volume of the heart may receive radiation, which may result in late morbidity. The value of conformal intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to avoid heart dose was studied.Breast, IMNs, and normal tissues were contoured for 30 consecutive patients previously treated with RT after lumpectomy for left-sided breast cancer. Eleven-beam, conformal, inverse-planned IMRT plans were developed and compared with best standard plans. Conformity Index (CI), Homogeneity Index (HI), and doses to normal tissues were compared.Intensity-modulated RT significantly improved (two-sided paired t test) HI (0.95 vs. 0.74), CI (0.91 vs. 0.48), volume of the heart receiving more than 30 Gy (V30-heart) (1.7% vs. 12.5%), and volume of lung receiving more than 20-Gy (V20-left lung) (17.1% vs. 26.6%), all p < 0.001. The mean Healthy Tissue Volume (HTV = CT set – PTV) dose was similar between IMRT and best standard plans (6.0 and 6.9 Gy, respectively), but IMRT increased the volume of normal tissues receiving low-dose RT: V5-right lung (13.7% vs. 2.0%), V5-right breast (29.2% vs. 7.9%), and V5-HTV (31.7% vs. 23.6%), all p < 0.001. IMRT plans were generated in less than 60 min and treatment delivered in approximately 20 min, suggesting that this technique is clinically applicable.IMRT significantly improved conformity and homogeneity for plans when the breast + IMNs were in the CTV. Heart and lung volume receiving high doses were decreased, but more healthy tissue received low doses. A simple algorithm based on amount of heart included in the standard plan showed limited ability to predict the benefit from IMRT.
