The mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) is one of the most frequent diseases treated in emergency departments. Extensive studies addressing evidence-based treatment criteria have been published, the indication for CT scans depending on clinical symptoms appeared to be one of the critical issues. In this study, the question was raised whether or not the developed evidence-based criteria may be transferred to the patients of a German level 1 trauma centre. Within 2 years (2004/05) 1841 patients with a traumatic brain injury were treated, 1042 patients with a mild traumatic brain injury and with an age over 14 years were included in the study. Long-term success of distraction osteogenesis depends on the ability of the surrounding soft tissues to tolerate distraction forces and to adapt to the resulting increase in skeletal length and volume. The hypothesis tested in this study was that mandibular elongation by distraction induces myocyte proliferation. Unilateral mandibular angle osteotomies were performed in 16 Yucatan minipigs. The hemimandibles were lengthened using semiburied distraction devices (Synthes Maxillofacial, Paoli, PA) with 0-day latency, 1, 2, or 4 mm/d distraction rates, and a neutral fixation period of twice the gap size in days. In 2 additional animals, the dissection and osteotomies were performed, and distraction devices were placed without activation (sham control). At the end of neutral fixation, tissues were taken from masseter muscle overlying the osteotomy and the equivalent region on the unoperated side (contralateral control). Proliferation of myocytes was estimated using immunohistochemical localization with antibodies against proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). Muscle overlying the distracted mandible showed 6-fold more PCNA-positive myocytes (16.8% +/- 11.3%) than the contralateral control side (2.8% +/- 1.1%, P < .0001). In the 2 sham-control animals, there was a low index of PCNA-positive myocytes on both the osteotomy (2%, 5%) and the contralateral sides (1%, 2%). The results of this study suggest that distraction of the porcine mandible by the protocol described induces myocyte proliferation in the masseter muscle. A proliferative response may contribute to improved long-term stability of mandibular expansion by distraction osteogenesis.

Decline in episodic memory is one of the most prominent cognitive deficits seen in late adulthood. It is therefore surprising that few studies have examined how the related capacity for episodic foresight might also be affected in this age group. Preliminary evidence suggests that older adults show deficits in generating phenomenological characteristics of future events, but the critical question of whether such deficits extend to generating and executing appropriate future intentions remains to be addressed. Here, we present 2 studies. In Study 1, we report the results of our pilot testing, which was used to develop and validate stimuli for the first measure of this construct that is appropriate for use in adult populations. In Study 2, we administer this measure to 40 older and 40 younger adults. An extensive programme of experiments was conducted in the former USSR on transfer of radionuclides to a wide range of different agricultural animals. Only a few of these studies were made available in the English language literature or taken into account in international reviews of gastrointestinal uptake. The paper gives extended information on Russian research on radionuclide absorption in the gut of farm animals performed in controlled field and laboratory experiments from the 1960s to the current time. The data presented in the paper, together with English language values, will be used to provide recommended values of absorption specifically for farm animals within the revision of the IAEA Handbook of Parameter Values IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency, 1994. Hepatocarcinogenesis is under polygenic control. We analyzed gene expression patterns of dysplastic liver nodules (DNs) and hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) chemically-induced in F344 and BN rats, respectively susceptible and resistant to hepatocarcinogenesis. Expression profiles were performed by microarray and validated by quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot. Cluster analysis revealed two distinctive gene expression patterns, the first of which included normal liver of both strains and BN nodules, and the second one F344 nodules and HCC of both strains. We identified a signature predicting DN and HCC progression, characterized by highest expression of oncosuppressors Csmd1, Dmbt1, Dusp1, and Gnmt, in DNs, and Bhmt, Dmbt1, Dusp1, Gadd45g, Gnmt, Napsa, Pp2ca, and Ptpn13 in HCCs of resistant rats. Perforated whole-cell patch-clamp recordings obtained with nystatin are frequently used to preserve intracellular integrity. However, the perforated-patch configuration may sometimes undergo a spontaneous change into the conventional whole-cell configuration, especially when lymphocytes are investigated. The electrophysiological criteria-- previously described--for establishing the existence of the perforated whole-cell configuration have been shown to be insufficient. Thus, the dye eosin, applied to the pipette solution, was tested as a tool for discriminating between the perforated and the conventional whole-cell configurations on rat T-lymphocytes. The dye never entered the cell from the pipette during the entire measurement in the perforated whole-cell configuration. In contrast, all cells in the conventional whole-cell configuration became red immediately after membrane rupture. Eosin barely changed the currents studied. The results suggest that eosin is a dye of choice for verifying a true perforated-patch configuration.

The present study aimed to explore the psychometric properties of the Coach-Athlete Relationship
Questionnaire (CART-Q) in the Chinese language. Based on the 3+1Cs of the coach-athlete
relationship conceptual model (Jowett, 2007a), the CART-Q aims to measure three interpersonal
psychological constructs, namely: closeness, commitment, and complementarity from a direct
perspective and a meta-perspective (see Jowett, 2009). This study examined the factorial validity
of both direct and meta-perspective versions of the translated CART-Q in the Chinese language
with a sample of 246 elite Chinese athletes by using confirmatory factor analysis. Its concurrent
validity was also examined via a three-step mediation analysis using structural equation modelling.
Overall, findings provided tenable support for the validity and reliability of the two CART-Q
versions within the Chinese coach-athlete relationship context. The possibility of subtle cultural
variations in the multidimensional conception of coach-athlete relationships are discussed alongside
implications for theory, research, and practice.

This study was meant to investigate the psychometric properties and clinical utility of the Lehrer Woolfolk Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire (LWASQ), an instrument for assessment of somatic, behavioral and cognitive aspects of anxiety. Confirmatory factor analysis on data from social phobics (n = 108), normal adults (n = 103) and normal adolescents (n = 650) showed that the three original factors were strongly replicated in each sample. The three subscales appeared to have high internal consistency, while data on convergent and divergent validity were satisfactory. In addition, the subscales did very well in discriminating between phobic patients and normals, and were able to detect treatment effects. In the discussion the instrument is compared with other self report measures of anxiety dimensions, like the Cognitive Somatic Anxiety Questionnaire (CSAQ) and the Worry-Emotionality Scale (WES). It is suggested that similar questionnaires, adjusted to the separate anxiety disorders, should be developed.

This study examines the relationship between a computerized neuropsychological assessment battery, the Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics (ANAM) and a widely used ability measure, Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Cognitive Ability (WJ-III). Results indicated substantial relationship between the ANAM throughput (accuracy/response time) scores and the WJ-III Cognitive Efficiency cluster. An unexpectedly strong relationship was evident between accuracy scores on the ANAM Logical Reasoning scale and the WJ-III General Intellectual Ability score, purporting to measure the g factor. The findings support the viability of the ANAM as a time- and cost-effective tool for appraisal of cognitive function.
