Ukrainian Orthodox Church

The author, based on archival sources, memoires and scholarly literature, attempts to demythologize the concept of "the chaplains of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army", which appears in both historical publications and widely understood journalism. In his opinion, there was no phenomenon that could be described as "UPA chaplains". We can possibly talk about Ukrainian Greek Catholic and Orthodox "unofficial priests" or "clergy who have joined for various reasons the underground", but from a formal point of view they were not chaplains. It was not a large group either.

Дисертація є дослідженням історичних духовно-культурних зв’язків України і Афону та діяльності українських духовних осередків на Афоні як в середньовічні, так і ранньомодерні часи, зокрема у XVII – перш. трет. ХІХ ст.
У рамках дисертаційного дослідження на основі аналізу широкого кола архівних джерел та опублікованих матеріалів у роботі розкрито специфіку зародження та розвитку українсько-афонських духовно-культурних зв’язків, їхній вплив на відродження православного руху в Україні та подальші церковні, культурні і політичні процеси в Україні протягом XVII – XVІII ст. Сукупність цих та інших історичних подій сприяла заснуванню та діяльності у XVІІІ ст. чотирьох українських чернечих осередків на Афоні, зосереджених у скитах Чорний Вир та пророка Іллі, Костянтинівській обителі та в монастирі Симонопетра, їхнім зв’язкам з українським козацтвом та чернецтвом, участі Запорозької та Задунайської Січі у ктиторській підтримці цих обителей тощо. Встановлено, що це сприяло як зміцненню контактів з центром православного чернецтва на Афоні, так і посиленню його популярності серед українського чернецтва та козацтва, забезпечуючи взаємний духовний і культурний обмін і вплив один на одного.
Наукова новизна полягає в тому, що у дисертаційному дослідженні використані маловідомі архівні джерела, на основі яких комплексно досліджено процес заснування і діяльності українських чернечих осередків на Афоні у XVIII – перш. трет. ХІХ ст., їх зв’язків з українським чернецтвом та козацтвом в Україні. Наголошено, що українські афонські обителі, зокрема скити «Чорний Вир» та пророка Іллі, є важливою складовою історії, духовної культури і спадщини українського чернецтва на Афоні, прямим свідченням тісних зв’язків Запорозької та Задунайської Січі з Афоном. Зазначено, що ці історико-культурні та архітектурні пам’ятники присутності українського чернецтва та козацтва на Афоні мають духовно-культурну і науково-історичну цінність. Подальше вивчення феномену української присутності на Афоні є одним з перспективних напрямків у сучасній українській науці. Також це сприятиме формуванню українського афонознавства як окремого наукового напрямку.

Shumylo S. V. The Development of Spiritual and Cultural Ties between Ukraine and Athos from the Seventeenth Century to the First Third of the Nineteenth Century. – Qualifying scientific work on the basis of manuscripts.

Shumylo’s thesis explores the history of the spiritual and cultural ties between Ukraine and Athos, and the activity of Athonite spiritual centres in both mediaeval and earlymodern times – from the seventeenth century to the first third of the nineteenth century.
Drawing on a wide range of archival and published documents, it outlines the onset and development of the spiritual and cultural ties between Ukraine and Athos, and shows how these ties influenced the Ukrainian Orthodox revival giving rise to ecclesiastical, cultural and political developments in Ukraine from the seventeenth to the eighteenth centuries.
In particular, the influence of Athos hesychastic tradition during this period was important for further spiritual awakening and cultural development in the Ukrainian lands. Athos monks joined the restoration and spread of hesychasm traditions within the Kyiv metropolitanate, making a significant contribution to the formation of ancient Ukrainian culture, literature and art.
It was found that in the late XVI - early XVII centuries (after the events of the Brest Union in 1596) Ukrainian Athos monks took an active part in the revival of Orthodoxy in Ukraine, joined the restoration of the Orthodox hierarchy of the Kyiv metropolitanate, reforming Ukrainian Orthodox monasteries, cultural and educational, literary and polemical activities, as well as contributed to the involvement of the Ukrainian Cossacks in defending the rights and freedom of the Orthodox religion in the Commonwealth.
It is proved that during the second half of the XVII and XVIII centuries the spiritual and cultural ties of the Ukrainian monasticism and the Cossacks with Athos became noticeably more active. An important role was played by the Ukrainian Cossack foreman, who considered his participation in the material support of Athos monasteries as a certain attribute of his status. Analysis of sources shows that donors of Athos monasteries during the Hetmanate were often Ukrainian hetmans and Cossack officers.
These developments led to the foundation of four flourishing Ukrainian monastic sights on Athos: the Cherny Vir and Prophet Elijah Sketes, the St Constantine Kellion and within Simonopetra Monastery. Ukrainian Cossacks and monks played an important part here, as did benefactors from Zaporozh´ya and Zadunayskaya Sech´. The thesis shows that these ties increased the popularity of Athonite monasticism with the Cossacks and in Ukraine, facilitating mutual spiritual and cultural exchange.
In particular, it was found out that the monastery "Black Whirlpool" was an important Ukrainian center on Mount Athos, and its founders were Ukrainian monks and representatives of the Cossack elders. The monks in this monastery were mostly natives of Ukrainian lands, in particular the former Zaporozhian Cossacks. The existence of close contacts of the Chorny Vyr hermitage with the Zaporozhian Sich and of the waterway from Zaporozhye to Mount Athos in the XVIII century is proved. The results of the study allow us to assert the importance of Ilyinsky monastery, which was also founded by Ukrainian elder Paisiy Velychkovsky, in the history of monasticism on Mount Athos. In that monastery he established his own seminary, and the monastery itself became a center of spirituality, education and literature on Mount Athos and beyond. Later, the Ilyinsky monastery became the spiritual and cultural center of the Ukrainian Cossack emigration, where former Zaporozhian Cossacks from the Transdanubian Sich and Kuban struggled. The decline and devastation of Ukrainian monastic centers on Mount Athos are consequences of the events of the Greek national liberation revolution of 1821–1829.
The thesis is original because it draws on little-known archival sources of the eighteenth to the first third of the nineteenth centuries. It establishes the defining role of the Ukrainian Athonite cloisters – especially of Cherny Vir and the Prophet Elijah Skete – in the history, culture and heritage of Ukrainian monasticism on Athos; and it demonstrates the strong links between the Zaporoz`ka and Zadunayska Sich´ with the Holy Mountain. The presence of Ukrainian and Cossack monks has left significant cultural and architectural traces on Mount Athos. Further study of the Ukrainian Athonite presence is an avenue to be explored by Ukrainian scholars.

Монографія піднімає малодосліджене як в історіографії питання з історії Церкви ХХ ст. У фокусі зацікавлення авторки – життя православної громади в Українській РСР у повоєнні десятиліття, коли її єдиним легальним представником була Російська Православна Церква. Формально „возз’єднані” із РПЦ українські греко-католики, будучи насильницьки інкорпоровані до цієї громади, суттєво вплинули на неї в національному, обрядовому й організаційному планах, що спричинилося до поступової й повільної українізації й автономізації Українського екзархату.
Герої цієї книги – пересічні віряни, парафіяльні священики, єпархіальні архиєреї, керівники екзархату, які захищали своє право вірити в Бога і практикувати свою релігію саме так, а не інакше, в державі, яка нав’язувала своїм суб’єктам зовсім інакший світогляд і вимагала єдиної лояльності – до правлячого режиму. Послуговуючись широкою і різноплановою джерельною базою, використовуючи новітні історіографічні розробки і методологічні підходи, аторка піднімає і відповідає на низку важливих питань, без яких неможливо збагнути ні те, як вижила інституційна релігійність в радянську добу, ні те, чим зумовлюється еклезіальна ситуація в сучасній Україні.

The decline of the communist regime in the late 1980s stimulated decentralizing processes
within the Russian Orthodox Church; a final result being the emergence of Eastern Christian
Churches in independent Ukraine: the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate,
the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate, the Ukrainian Autocephalous
Orthodox Church, and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Throughout the next two and
a half decades the Ukrainian religious landscape has been simultaneously characterized by
sharp conflicts and a search for ways of peaceful coexistence between various confessions;
ecumenical initiatives, and asserting one’s “canonicity” against the “schismatic” others; attempts
by some Churches to act as civil agencies and national institutions; attempts by the state under
President Yanukovych to revive a “state” Church following the Russian model; moves towards a
Local Ukrainian Orthodox Church and also towards “Russkii mir” (The Russian World). Crucial
issues are — the Churches’ search for their place in the post-Soviet Ukrainian realm and their
choices of models for coexistence with Ukrainian officialdom and society. In its approach the
article provides a general profile of each Church, examines state policies towards religion and
the Church in independent Ukraine, and describes a turning point, that being the Revolution
of Dignity’s deep influence on the Churches’ perceptions of themselves and their place in
Ukrainian life.

Wie muss man den gegenwärtigen Streit zwischen den Orthodoxen Kirchen in der Ukraine bewerten, und was kommt dabei heraus? Seit der Ökumenische Patriarch Bartholomäus von Konstantinopel Anfang September angekündigt hat, dass er nach Wegen sucht, wie er der Orthodoxen Kirche der Ukraine Autokephalie (Selbständigkeit) verleihen kann, 2 beobachten wir eine Eskalierung des Konflikts zwischen der Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche (ROK) und ihrem ukrainischen Ableger (UOK-MP) einerseits und der Ukrainisch-Orthodoxen Kirche des Kiever Patriarchats (UOK-KP) und der Ukrainischen Autokephalen Orthodoxen Kirche (UAOK) andererseits. 3 Der Konflikt zieht weite Kreise, und es besteht die Möglichkeit, dass es zu einer grundlegenden Rekonfiguration der Kirchensituation in der Ukraine kommt. Der vorliegende Beitrag basiert vor allem auf der kirchenneutralen Berichterstattung in der russischen Nezavisimaja Gazeta sowie der ukrainisch-und russischsprachigen Religija v Ukraïni, welche über alle grossen ukrainischen Konfessionen berichtet. So gut es ging wurden deren Beiträge mit den Informationen und Erklärungen der im Streit involvierten Patriarchate korreliert; die dem Ökumenischen Patriarchat zuzurechnende griechische Plattform Orthodoxia bietet zentrale Beiträge auch in russischer und englischer Übersetzung. Meine Situationsanalyse weist auf die beträchtlichen Risiken hin, die mit der gegenwärtigen Entwicklung des Kirchenstreits verbunden sind.

The aim of the article is to analyse the place and importance of the Orthodox Church in the society and political culture of Ukraine after 2013. The new political realities following the Revolu-tion of Dignity, the annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbas created new challenges for the Or-thodox Church in Ukraine. Particularly important is the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church’s authority over the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.At the turn of 2018 and 2019, by a decision of Patriarch Bartholomew I and with the support of the Ukrainian political authorities, a new reality became fact in Ukrainian Orthodoxy. However, the creation of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (as a metropolis) does not mean that the split has been overcome. There will be two hostile, equal and comparably strong structures in Ukraine, politically backed by Ukraine and Russia, and this will draw those countries into conflicts over their religious structures and the wealth that their communities possess. At this stage, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine will rely primarily on the potential of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate, and this fact in turn will hinder the transfer of bishops and priests associated with the Moscow Patriarchate. The rift will be difficult to repair.

This book first proves that the rationale behind Russia’s aggressive actions in its neighborhood resides in its goal of achieving certain geostrategic objectives which are largely predefined by the state’s imperial traditions, memories, and fears that the Kremlin may irretrievably lose control over lands which were once Russian. In other words, Russia constantly remains an expansion-oriented and centralized state regardless of epochs and political regimes ruling over it. That is its geopolitical modus operandi successfully tested throughout history. This book also scrutinizes Ukraine as a young post-colonial and post-communist state which, unlike Russia, is more prone to democratize and decentralize. To understand the logics of the ongoing Ukrainian transformation, its domestic and international developments are assessed in their connection to the Soviet political tradition and the medieval legacy of the Cossack statehood (15–18 centuries). This book outlines differences between the political cultures of Ukrainian and Russian nations. This envisages scrutiny of historical experiences and their impacts on the Ukrainian and Russian state-building, institutional structures, national identity, religious issues, and other features of sovereignty. Based on these discoveries, a structure of symbolic thinking which predefines indigenous understandings of justice and order has been constructed for Ukrainians and Russians.

In 2018 religious conflict in Ukraine reached a new level of intensity. On the eve of national elections in 2019, the President and parliament of Ukraine set themselves the ambitious goal of creating a single national church out of the many Christian denominations. This controversial initiative has re-opened old confessional wounds, and risks creating a split among Christians worldwide.

У статті розглядається такий чинник сучасної мовної ситуації в Україні, як взаємовідношення між вибором мови й узагалі мовного коду спілкування для тих чи інших груп населення і їхніми преференціями щодо належності до певної конфесії або принаймні пов’язуванням себе з відповідною конфесійною традицією та культурою, оскільки наявність неодномовної ситуації — з масовою українсько-російською двомовністю — ускладнюється в країні наявністю поліконфесійності. Комплекс проблем мовно-конфесійних взаємовідношень ускладнюється також у зв’язку з наявністю істотної варіантності в межах конфесійного стилю української мови.

Проблематика мовної і конфесійної самоідентифікації різних груп населення проаналізована також за даними соціологічного опитування, проведеного влітку 2014 року в регіоні Центральної України. До опитування були включені не тільки дві національні / літературні мови — українська й російська, але й — як окремий
мовний код — українсько-російський «суржик» (хоча це, звичайно, значною мірою умовно, оскільки основу його структури становить українська мова).

While Poroshenko and Patriarch Bartholomew have cast the church split as a struggle against undue Russian influence in Ukraine, this simplistic narrative does not address either what critics describe as the president’s radical departure from Western notions of separation of church and state, or the consternation that the Ecumenical Patriarch’s actions have stirred up among the world’s other Orthodox churches.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC-KP) and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) have submitted a request to the Ecumenical Patriarch (i.e. the pa-triarch of Constantinople, the supreme head of all Orthodox Churches) to grant autocephaly to Ukrainian Orthodoxy. On 19 April the Ukrainian parliament, at the request of President Petro Poroshenko, expressed its support for this measure. The President himself expressed his support on 22 April. There are numerous indications that a positive decision regarding this issue has already been made, and a relevant thomos (patriarch's decree) will be announced any time this year Proclamation of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Particular Orthodox Church (Ukrayinska Pomisna Avtokefalna Pravoslavna Tserkva, UAPOC) will likely trigger a new wave of confessional conflicts across Ukraine, including a likely schism in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which recognizes the primacy of the patriarch of Moscow (UOC). It is beyond any doubt that a certain portion of believers and clergy, which today is difficult to estimate, will remain loyal to Moscow and that the Moscow Patriarchate will make every effort to support Ukrainian structures of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). The government of Ukraine, for its part, will try to prevent the development of these structures. From the political point of view, both the expected granting of autocephaly to Ukrainian Ortho-doxy and the likely conflicts resulting from this are favourable to President Poroshenko because they increase both his and his party's chances of re-election in the elections planned for 2019. On the one hand, he will gain new trust from patriotically minded voters, on the other hand, opponents of autocephaly will coalesce around pro-Russian parties. This in turn may help promote a pro-Russian politician to compete with Poroshenko in the second round of presidential voting as a weak counter-candidate whom the current president would defeat relatively easily.

The article examines the varieties and modern practices of using liturgical antiphons in the Ukrainian liturgical practice. The specifics of the use of antiphons among all Orthodox Ukrainian denominations are considered. A unifying model of the use of established and newly created liturgical antiphons as one of the segments of liturgical reform needed by the Church is offered. It is stated that the integration of the latest antiphonal texts into the church practice will contribute to enrichment and diversification of the liturgical tradition. Taking into account the newly-formed antiphons among the variety of practices, the author's vision of the application of spiritual and liturgical heritage and Greek liturgical tradition of the new era in modern worship is presented. Ukraine’s President from 2014 to 2019, Petro Poroshenko, in collaboration with the non-canonical or unrecognized Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate and Ukrainian Autocephalous Church, took resolute advantage of the resulting change of mood in Istanbul. After two earlier unsuccessful applications, they were able to quickly create and  get officially recognized in late 2018 t0 early 2019 by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, a national and united Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). This was a goal that earlier Ukrainian leaders, and above all, the 2005 to 2010 President Viktor Yushchenko, had been striving to accomplish for many years, but had been unable to achieve. In early 2019, a large delegation from Kyiv went to Istanbul where the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate unanimously and officially approved an earlier decision to grant full autocephaly to the newly founded and united OCU.

The unity of Russian and Ukrainian Orthodoxy, to be sure, might have been possible to preserve, had the Moscow Patriarchate’s hierarchs taken a clearly and officially critical approach towards Russia’s covert military invasion into Ukraine since 2014. Yet, neither Metropolitan Kirill nor any other high representative of the Russian Orthodox Church appear to have done or said anything noteworthy – as, arguably, as Christians they should have – to substantively condemn or moderate the Kremlin’s aggressiveness. The origins of Eastern Orthodoxy’s schism lie thus neither in Kyiv nor in Constantinople, but in Moscow. It would be sad, if Russia’s war against Ukraine and the subsequent deep split in eastern Slavic Christianity will also spoil the otherwise very close relations between Ukraine and Georgia.

Как на украинский томос отреагировали высшие иерархи и священники Русской православной церкви (РПЦ)? Какие аргументы использовала РПЦ для отрицания права Православной церкви Украины (ПЦУ) на независимость от Москвы? После пяти лет ползучей гибридной войны России против Украины в конце 2018 года их многоуровневый политический, экономический, гражданский, военный и культурный конфликт достиг и сферы религии. Радикальная перестройка отношений между российской и украинской христианскими общинами показала себя в начале 2019 года, когда Украина получила так называемый «томос» (дословно: «маленькая книга»).

Η απόφαση της Έκτακτης Ιεραρχίας της Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος και η αναγνώριση του δικαιώματος του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου να χορηγεί τόμους Αυτοκεφαλίας, έδωσε ώθηση στην έξοδο από την σιωπή και άλλων Ορθοδόξων Εκκλησιών. Ήδη αρκετές Ορθόδοξες Εκκλησίες άρχισαν δημοσίως να επικρίνουν θέσεις και στάσεις ορισμένων αντιπροσώπων του Πατριαρχείου της Μόσχας. Πέραν αυτού γίνεται λόγος για την πρώτη μνημόνευση υπό του Αρχιεπισκόπου Αθηνών κ. Ιερωνύμου. Ήδη ο νέος Προκαθήμενος της Ουκρανίας Επιφάνιος, εντάχθηκε στα επίσημα Δίπτυχα της Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος, ως Μητροπολίτης Κιέβου και πάσης Ουκρανίας. Πάντως θα πρέπει πανορθοδόξως να εξετασθούν κάποια στιγμή και άλλα θέματα, όπως το δήθεν αυτοκέφαλο των Ρώσων της διασποράς, που δεν έχει καμία αναγνώριση από Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία και ούτε μνημονεύεται στα ιερά δίπτυχα ο προκαθήμενός τους. Αυτό το λησμονούν οι Εκκλησίες εκείνες που ζητούν πανορθόδοξη για την Ουκρανία και το παραβλέπουν εσκεμμένα, θέλοντας να παρακάμψουν τις αυθαιρεσίες της μοσχοβίτικης εκκλησιαστικής πολιτικής, οι οποίες είναι βαθύτατα προβληματικές στην κανονική και εκκλησιαστική de facto κανονική τάξη. აღსანიშნავია, რომ 2014 წელს რუსეთ-უკრაინის ომის დაწყების შემდეგ მოსკოვის საპატრიარქოს დაქვემდებარებაში მყოფი უკრაინის მართლმადიდებელი ეკლესია უკრაინის ოთხ ეკლესიას შორის სულ უფრო ანაქრონისტული ხდება. მოსკოვის საპატრიარქოს კრემლის მიერ უკრაინაში 2014 წლიდან განხორციელებული სამხედრო ქმედებები რომ დაეგმო, უკრაინისა და რუსეთის მართლმადიდებლობის ერთიანობა შესაძლოა შენარჩუნებულიყო. თუმცა პატრიარქ კირილესა და რუსეთის მართლმადიდებელი ეკლესიის სხვა ოფიციალურ სასულიერო პირებს მსგავსი განცხადება არ გაუკეთებიათ. ბოლოს შეიძლება ვთქვათ, რომ აღმოსავლური მართლმადიდებლობის განხეთქილების მთავარი მიზეზი მოსკოვში უნდა ვეძებოთ. სამწუხარო იქნება, თუ რუსეთის ომი უკრაინის წინააღმდეგ და განხეთქილება აღმოსავლურ სლავურ ქრისტიანობაში უკრაინასა და საქართველოს შორის მჭიდრო მეგობრულ ურთიერთობებსაც დააზარალებს.

There is no single dominant religion with which most of the populace would identify. The churches are largely regional in nature. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church — Kyiv Patriarchate, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church — Moscow Patriarchate, have become, for the politicians as well as for the people, the symbols of two " Ukrainian projects ". Their simultaneous functioning for almost twenty years, have become intertwined in the process of formation of a political nation, which subsumes all identities of the post-Soviet territory of Ukraine. The fact that certain politicians equate the issue of belonging to a particular denomination with the problem of loyalty to one's own state, obstructs the dialogue among orthodox churches and does not benefi t social consolidation.

Responding to Tbilisi’s nervousness about Moscow’s possible recognition of Abkhazian autocephaly, the theologian Giorgi Tiginashvili maintains that it is shameful for the Georgian Orthodox Church to not support Ukrainian autocephaly. He argues that the Moscow Patriarch has no right to recognize the autocephaly of an Abkhazian Orthodox church: “The argument that Russia will encourage separatism in terms of ecclesiastical turmoil is just ridiculous, [because] this has already been done. [Russia] has a bishop and around fifteen clerics who seek to spread anti-Georgian narratives and disinformation.”

The aim of the article is to analyse the place and importance of the Orthodox Church in the  society and political culture of Ukraine after 2013. The new political realities following the “revolution of dignity”, the annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbas set new challenges for the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. Particularly important is the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church's authority over the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Moscow Patriarchate.

Artykuł stanowi analizę znaczenia i miejsca Kościoła prawosławnego w życiu społecznym i politycznym Ukrainy po 2013 r. Nowe realia polityczne po „rewolucji godności”, aneksji Krymu i wojnie w Donbasie postawiły przed Kościołem prawosławnym na Ukrainie nowe wyzwania. Szczególnie ważny okazuje się wpływ zwierzchnictwa Rosyjskiej Cerkwi Prawosławnej na podległą mu Ukraińską Cerkiew Prawosławną Patriarchatu Moskiewskiego.

Najnowsze wydarzenia w dziejach współczesnego prawosławia, zwłaszcza w ostatnich trzech latach, mogą napawać pesymizmem i rozgoryczeniem. Powodem tego stanu rzeczy jest narastające napięcie strukturalne pomiędzy poszczególnymi wspólnotami autokefalicznymi. Jednym z dominujących czynników tego procesu staje się wewnętrzna rywalizacja, inspirowana głównie przez Rosyjski Kościół Prawosławny (RKP), która w rezultacie zakłada zmianę obowiązującego porządku autorytetu władzy w prawosławiu, w tym doprowadzenie do reformy w dziedzinie doktryny eklezjologicznej. W tle zaistniałej sytuacji pozostaje problem nadzwyczajnych kompetencji Patriarchy Ekumenicznego, dzięki którym może on decydować o ustanowieniu autokefalii dla określonej wspólnoty prawosławnej. Podstawą do podjęcia rozważań nad wspomnianymi kwestiami jest powołanie w grudniu 2021 roku pod patronatem Patriarchatu Moskiewskiego nowego egzarchatu prawosławnego w Afryce. W odniesieniu do tego wydarzenia przedmiotem szczególnej analizy w artykule są: kanoniczna doniosłość decyzji Synodu RKP, dążenie do zmiany prawosławnej eklezjologii, kwestionowanie prawdziwej sakramentalności i próba redukcji eucharystycznej synaksy .

Стаття має на меті з'ясувати, яке місце займає канонічне право як галузь права у взаємодії з іншими галузями права-церковним, міжнародним та державним. Зауважено, що дослідження правової природи канонічного та церковного права в українській науці майже не проводилися. А актуальність цієї теми викликана передовсім формуванням нових відносин у церковно-релігійній сфері, які вплинуть і на розвиток міжнародних відносин як на міждержавному, так і на міжконфесійному рівні. Автором застосовано логічний, історико-порівняльний та системно-структурний методи. Завдяки цьому вдалося з'ясувати історичні та теоретичні основи формування та існування правових норм в умовах взаємодії та впливу церковно-релігійних, міжнародних та державних факторів. Стверджується, що канонічне право є окремим правопорядком, який співвідноситься із міжнародним правом. При цьому він не є частиною цього права, хоча й може з ним взаємодіяти. Саме тому не можна стверджувати і що канонічне право є підгалуззю міжнародного права. Так само достатньо спірним вважається і твердження щодо можливого розвитку канонічного права. Насправді канонічне право є найбільш архаїчним, сталим і догматичним стосовно будь-якої іншої галузі права. Було проаналізовано велику кількість наукових досліджень різних напрямів і шкіл, у результаті чого зроблено висновок щодо відсутності єдиного розуміння сутності канонічного права.

The Syrian Arab Republic and Ukraine are two states which, in the early twenty-first century, have become foci of competing visions for major powers to advance their own geopolitical interests. Both states, as a result, have struggled to determine the outcome of their own national affairs. The involvement of the EU, NATO, the Russian Federation and others in local affairs challenges not just the Ukrainian and Syrian governments but also religious communities. Both states are religiously plural societies: Syria is set apart from Ukraine through a greater variety of religious traditions and a majority Muslim population. Ukraine, meanwhile, has linked yet distinctive manifestations of Christianity.

As contemporary conflicts have affected the Christian populations in both countries attempts have been made by two Eastern Catholic churches – the Melkite Catholic Church and Ukrainian Catholic Church (UCC) – to support the other as they face varying levels of threat to their communities. In this article I offer, firstly, an introduction to the historical development of the Melkite and Ukrainian Catholic communities. Secondly, I consider the religious and geopolitical context of the attendance of the Melkite patriarch, Gregory III Laham (r.2000– ), at the UCC’s September 2016 Synod.
