The Clarks renew their passion for the food of Spain and the Muslim Mediterranean, but this time they find their inspiration a little closer to homein an East End allotment. Documenting the authors' year in a Manor Garden allotment, this book captures the spirit of the community through the recipes and photographs that reflect everyday activities in this area, from Turkish women rolling flatbreads to families gathering to grill kebabs during the weekend. The 150 imaginative and seasonal recipes include Moro favorites along with new combinations such as pigeon salad with figs, chickpeas and pomegranate molasses, tortilla with onion tops, and courgette and yogurt soup. Showing how to experiment with plants that can be eaten at various different stages of their growth, this cookbook also includes recipes for parts of the crop that might otherwise be discarded (celery leaves, pea shoots, and poppy leaves) and makes use of produce that does not ripen, such as green tomatoes. Recipes for using produce at the end of the growing season, such as chili jam, tomato preserve, and pickled garlic, are also detailed.

Refreshing new ideas on food

This is a great cook book. I'm always looking for new ideas on food and this book is like a breath of fresh air. It's recipies have interesting, and at least to me, new flavor combinations. I've had the book 6 months or so and have tried a dozen or more of the recipies. Most of the ingredients are readily available locally when in season, although for some of the recipies, I had to make a mental note to look for special ingredients when I was in San Jose, prior to cooking it.

As an interesting note, I was enthralled by the people stories and the stories of the "allotment." These stories where so interesting and the descriptions accurate enough that I was able to use Google Earth to find the community garden and match satellite images with some of the photos in the book. I think the satellite images still exist on Google even as the Olympic construction has already raized the gardens.

Having started to cook seriously at age 10, I've spent my culinary life adding a dash of this, a pile of that. In reading through the recipes in Moro East, I realized that the seasonings were out of my comfort zone for such casual measuring. This was a challenge: measure accurately for each recipe. I met the challenge and was amazed at the food I produced from these recipes. Example: At Christmas I decided to do the applesauce with crystalized sugar for dessert. Our main meal was heavy and screamed for a light-handed dessert. Applesauce? My 9-year-old grandson licked his bowl clean and proclaimed it to be the best dessert he had ever eaten.

Flimsy binding

I was happy to find the Moro books at a decent price point in paperback. I ordered both Moro and Moro East and was extremely disappointed when they arrived. Moro cover had already come unglued from the binding upon arrival. I sent both back, and will now just wait to buy second hand copies of the hardcovers when they come up. It's such a shame because the cover art is so beautiful, and the recipes lovely - the flimsy binding is a disservice to the book.

Great recipes by a talented pair of chefs. We have all of the Moro cookbooks. I would describe them as a variation on a theme based on Spanish and Moroccan cuisine. It might be difficult to obtain some ingredients, but generally the recipes are very accessible and flavorful. Inspirational, if you are looking to extend your repertoire.

Moro East I used this book to help create the most important party I've ever held. It was to introduce my 45 year old daughter Sally, to my closest girlfriends. Sally was adopted just after her birth in 1966 when I was 16. She found me in October last year. The experience is beyond all my dreams.
