The Gambia leaves Commonwealth: The man behind exit

The Gambian government is withdrawing from the Commonwealth, 48 years after it joined.

President Yahya Jammeh frequently accuses Britain of backing his political opponents and branded the Commonwealth a "neo-colonial institution" on state television.

He told the United Nations during his address last week Africans were determined to defend their "independence and dignity".
