"I used to feel embarrassed about having my period at school," says 14-year-old Labonno from Bangladesh. Almost one in three adolescent girls in the country skip school for a few days every month because of their periods. Many struggle without any guidance on menstrual hygiene or the means to buy menstrual products, which are considered expensive luxuries, especially in rural areas. To combat this, UNICEF Bangladesh and partners are working to end period stigma and prevent girls from dropping out of school because of it. They have set up menstrual hygiene corners in 31 schools, providing over 5,000 girls with access to sanitary pads and other hygiene products, resulting in a 25 percent increase in girls' school attendance. "Sanitary pads are always available in the hygiene corner," Labonno says. "I track my menstrual cycle on a calendar, so I know when my period is coming. Now I am prepared for it." Let's keep building a #PeriodFriendlyWorld where every girl can confidently attend school, break barriers and embrace her period with dignity. #MHDay2024 #MenstruationMatters

We repeat. A military besiegement and ground incursion in Rafah, Gaza, poses a catastrophic risk to the children sheltering there. Many of the children cramped in Rafah have been displaced multiple times and have lost homes, parents and loved ones. Thousands are injured, malnourished, traumatized or living with disabilities. They must be protected, along with the few remaining basic services and infrastructure they need to survive. For over seven months, we’ve witnessed this tragedy unfolding, resulting in thousands of children killed or injured. UNICEF continues to call for an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages and an end to the senseless killing of children.

After a devastating landslide struck a remote part of Papua New Guinea on Friday, UNICEF is on the ground, working tirelessly with the authorities and other partners to support relief efforts. The tragedy has claimed over 100 lives in the village of Kaokalam, Enga Province, about 600 kilometres northwest of Port Moresby, and affected at least 150 children, including 50 under the age of 5. Among other critical aid, we are distributing WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) dignity kits, which provide essential supplies like clean water, sanitation tools, and hygiene items to help families maintain health and dignity during emergencies. We are committed to ensuring that these vital resources reach those in need as quickly as possible.

This week, we are spotlighting nurse Ana Gabriela Ramirez and ambulance driver and healthcare assistant Mandaraybe Care - who belong to the Guarani indigenous community in Bolivia. Through the support of UNICEF and government partners, these health heroes play a pivotal role in increasing vaccination coverage among the indigenous communities, and protecting children from deadly diseases. #ForEveryChild, health.
