About half of U.S. organizations offer mindfulness training to employees to ease stress. But regardless of the effectiveness, this billion-dollar-a-year industry can’t get to the underlying problem, according to an Academy of Management Review article. “While mindfulness can reduce people’s stress and improve focus, it may only serve as a surface remedy within a broken system,” explained Sophia Town of Fordham University. “We see organizations putting a ton of stress on employees—through long working hours, insufficient work-life policies, and a culture obsessed with productivity and profit—and then expecting mindfulness offerings to help employees cope. The problem with this approach is that it puts the onus on the employee to ‘fix’ their stress and burnout, allowing organizations to continue causing suffering. Instead, we propose that leaders must revise their companies’ values and culture—including policies, practices, and procedures—from the inside out to become more humanistic.” #AOMScholars: Sophia Town, Ph.D., Christopher Reina, Boris H.J.M. Brummans, and Michael Pirson Read more: https://lnkd.in/gZU8bYJT #mindfulness #management #managementresearch
