James Harris Simons, co-founder of the Simons Foundation, passed away at 86. He is survived by his wife Marilyn Hawrys Simons, three children, five grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Simons was previously married to Barbara Simons from 1959 to 1974.
Tragically, in 1996, his son Paul, aged 34, was fatally hit by a car while riding his bicycle on Long Island. In 2003, his son Nicholas, aged 24, drowned during a trip to Bali, Indonesia. His son Nat Simons is an investor and philanthropist. His daughter Liz Simons is an educator and philanthropist.
In 1994, Simons and Marilyn, founded the Simons Foundation with an aim to support research in mathematics and fundamental sciences.
The news of his passing was confirmed by Simons Foundation president David Spergel.
“Jim was an exceptional leader who did transformative work in mathematics and developed a world-leading investment company,” said Spergel.
"Together with Marilyn Simons, the current Simons Foundation board chair, Jim created an organization that has already had enormous impact in mathematics, basic science and our understanding of autism. The Simons Foundation, an in-perpetuity foundation, will carry their vision for philanthropy into the future," he added.
Following his death, several people took to social media to calling Simons "the greatest investor."
"Jim Simons was the greatest—an unbelievably great investor, philanthropist, and man of character. I and all who knew him will miss him," Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates, wrote on X.
Investor Brandon Beylo wrote, "Wall Street lost a legend today. Rest in peace, Jim Simons. He was a true one-of-one character who built one of the most successful investment firms ever."
