In 1979 I became the first American social scientist allowed to do research in the PRC, where I documented the collapse of the commune system, the massive human rights abuses of the Mao years, and personally witnessed the forcible abortion and sterilization of women under the newly announced "one-child policy." The experience aroused me out of my academic slumber and led me to embark upon a career of writing and lecturing. The happy result has been the dozen books that are listed here, interspersed with public appearances in all 50 states and several dozen foreign countries and opportunities to work with both the White House and Congress on China policy.
The books range from A Mother's Ordeal, in which I tell the story of one woman's fight to save her second--and illegal--child from the population control police who were determined to abort her, to China Attacks, a techno-thriller a la Tom Clancy of an attempted Chinese invasion of Taiwan. My latest is called the Bully of Asia, and deals with China's effort to overturn the current U.S.-led world order and replace it with one dominated by China. In a world bristling with dangers, only one enemy poses a truly mortal challenge to the United States and the peaceful and prosperous world that America guarantees. That enemy is China.

The book is told from the very personal perspective of one woman's struggle to deal with both sides of the policy. An excellent portrayal of family planning in China.
and killed (partial birth abortions and infanticide). I cannot imagine having to apply for a permit to have a baby! This is an important book because it exposes the terrible abuses of China's government in controlling such a fundamental human right. I often hear people saying things like, "China's one child policy is unfortunate but necessary." They should read this book and also read up on the disastrous effects of the one child policy (gendercide, growing elderly population, high suicide rate among women, sex trafficking, etc.). To those who think that the instances of coercion are not representative of the experiences of the majority of Chinese people or are the unsanctioned actions of local officials, I ask, how else is the government to effectively enforce it's one child policy?
