As an event planner, I rely on the opportunities for natural public gatherings that open streets creates to program free events for the community. Families came from all over Brooklyn and told me it was the coolest birthday party they'd ever attended. They fell in love with Open Streets as well. I met so many families with children who were of similar age to my children. We would meet on the street every weekend and eat and drink while our children played. I have only eaten a meal inside an NYC restaurant/bar three times since April 2020. So I have really appreciated the additional outdoor dining opportunities afforded by Open Streets in my own neighborhood of Park Slope. Even today, the NYC Department of Health website says, "To reduce your risk of getting COVID-19: Consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor public settings, such as on public transit, at large events, and when shopping in crowded stores." (https://www.nyc.gov/site/doh/covid/covid-19-main.page) It seems obvious that the indoor space of a busy restaurant constitutes a "crowded indoor public setting." It is unconscionable that the NYC Department of Health recommends masking in crowded indoor public settings and then cuts funding for programs like Open Streets. Since no one can possibly mask while eating a meal, it is important that Open Streets and other similar programs continue so that people can still take precautions to avoid getting and spreading COVID, per the NYC Department of Health's guidance. | Positive | |||||||||||||||||||
