Many views of digital libraries (DLs) stem from what libraries currently do. Traditional libraries collect, organize, provide access to, and preserve objects in their collections. A library collection may include books, magazines, journals, video and audio media, and maps. The flexibility of digital technology allows it to handle new kinds of objects efficiently. DL collections can include things without direct physical analogs, such as algorithms or real-time data feeds. They also may include digitized representations of what have traditionally appeared largely in museums or archives. With the rise in cost of paper publications and library storage, increasing use of computers, and decreasing budgets, many libraries have to reduce their acquisition of books as well as their journal subscriptions. Documents in electronic form can become more available and widely used because the cost of digital storage and processing is going down (Fox et al., 1995a).

Purpose – Matter is an important topic of science as a discipline since its inception. Nevertheless, along with the evolution of semantic web, matter has got equal importance among the ontology developers. The current work describes an ontology of matter that the authors developed in the lab. The purpose of this paper is to come up with an exhaustive list of concepts and relations to cover matter domain under one umbrella, after identifying the gaps in the present ontologies. Design/methodology/approach – Ontology was developed following faceted analytico-synthetic approach of knowledge organization. The authors followed hybrid developmental approach which includes top-down as well as bottom-up development strategy, for creating classes and subclasses. The authors modelled matter domain comprehensively considering different aspects of matter. The theories behind the modelling approach helps to maintain the consistency of further extensions. Findings – Final ontology has around 280 concepts and as many as ...

Digital Libraries and Digital Repositories are data-intensive with large numbers of fulltext resources accessible online. Activities in the area of Semantic Web development recognize the significant part played by metadata and knowledge organization systems such as classification systems and thesauri in capturing and communicating ‘meaning’. We now have Web ontology standards, such as Simple Knowledge Organization Systems (SKOS), a common data model for sharing and linking knowledge organization systems via the Semantic Web. Standards such as SKOS are also meant to be used as a vehicle for deployment of knowledge organization systems that were not born digital (or XML/RDF) such as thesauri and bibliographic classifications. This paper attempts to present an application of the faceted classification scheme as enunciated by Ranganathan in developing ontologies. It further explores the issues in modelling the faceted scheme of Ranganathan using SKOS

Abstract A maturity model represents a pre-planned evolution path for a class of objects composed as discrete stages or levels. Thereby, the maturity model is an effective tool to assess the current capabilities and the future needs of an organization, process, or group. This study had two phases. The first phase identified the core literature on maturity models for library services and management. The second evaluated the specifications of the maturity models employed or derived for library services and management. A total of 12 maturity models were selected for the study. The selected models were reviewed based on 18 parameters, out of which nine were adopted from the literature study, and the authors identified nine others. These parameters were classified based on descriptive, structural, and administrative attributes of the models. The parameters help to identify the most appropriate maturity model for implementing it in a library or information center. Results show that several domain-specific free and commercial maturity models can improve the library and information services. Library and information professionals should utilize the opportunity available in user training and community support for maturity models to foster information services.

ABSTRACT This paper proposes an analysis of faceted theory and of the various knowledge organization approaches. Building upon the faceted theory of S.R. Ranganathan (1967), the paper intends to address the faceted classification approach applied to build domain ontologies. Based on this perspective, an ontology of the music domain has been analyzed that would serve as a case study. As classificatory ontologies are employed to represent the relationships of entities and objects on the Web, the faceted approach is deemed as an effective means to help organize Web content. While different knowledge organization systems are being employed to address the cluttered Web in different contexts and with various degrees of effectiveness, faceted ontologies have an enormous potential for addressing this issue by performing domain analysis for knowledge modeling and ultimately facilitating semantic information retrieval.

In the traditional library environment Cataloging in Publication (CIP) is very popular and the library staff can make use of CIP records to generate minimal cataloguing information. With the advent of Internet and the presence of book industry on the Net, the growing importance of metadata has resulted in ONIX (ONline Information eXchange). The benefits of crosswalk between ONIX and Dublin Core are too obvious to be ignored, as it saves the time of cataloguers in generating metadata in Dublin Core for the e-books or even printed books acquired by a library. This paper attempts to investigate the possibility of generating required metadata from available metadata formats, particularly the most popular Dublin Core (DC) from ONIX and presents mapping between ONIX and Qualified Dublin Core.

In this paper we propose a formal model which allows us to effectively represent and search for recipes in online environments. The proposed model is an entity-relationship model that provides relevant entity types and properties, formalized as an ontology. The important aspects of the recipe model are identified by means of competency questions. Our model advances the state of the art in that it supports essential queries that are typically not supported by websites and current reference data models, such as Schema.org and the BBC Food Ontology. We illustrate the methodology followed, the developed model, and the evaluation we conducted.

In this paper we present the design of a restaurant ontology, which involves a methodology, Yet Another Methodology for Ontology (YAMO). It is a hybrid approach that combines both top-down and bottom-up methods of knowledge organization. The YAMO approach is highly motivated by Ranganathan’s analytico- synthetic classification theory. This paper has also portrayed mathematically how a subpart of the restaurant ontology can be used as core ontology for the domain food.

The novel coronavirus has been declared a worldwide pandemic. The pandemic has unleashed health as well as economic devastation across the world. In view of this, various governments, researchers and agencies are trying to work towards solutions to control the spread of the virus. There are many studies that have been initiated that consider the various parameters that contribute to the spread of the virus. We present a model to predict the survival rate of Covid19 infected patients. The study takes into consideration death rate (normal) and Covid infection death rate in India. Other factors considered are the number of infections and active infection numbers. We also incorporate a ‘learning module’ to learn from the observed error rate. We compute the moving average of error which is then deployed to minimise projection error in the model. The factor obtained from the learning is deployed into the survival rate computation to achieve best results.

One of the aims of the LivingKnowledge project is to bring a new quality into search and knowledge management technology, by making opinions, bias, diversity and evolution more tangible and more digestible. In order to capture diversity in knowledge, we believe that developing more powerful tools for extracting information from both text and non-text media are keys to the success of the project.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the construction of a core ontology for food. To construct the core ontology, the authors propose here an approach called, yet another methodology for ontology plus (YAMO+). The goal is to exhibit the construction of a core ontology for a domain, which can be further extended and converted into application ontologies. Design/methodology/approach To motivate the construction of the core ontology for food, the authors have first articulated a set of application scenarios. The idea is that the constructed core ontology can be used to build application-specific ontologies for those scenarios. As part of the developmental approach to core ontology, the authors have proposed a methodology called YAMO+. It is designed following the theory of analytico-synthetic classification. YAMO+ is generic in nature and can be applied to build core ontologies for any domain. Findings Construction of a core ontology needs a thorough understanding of th...

This paper presents a formal framework for implementing a query refinement method. The method uses general principles of facet analysis. Two key notions are advanced and discussed: diversity and focus. Diversity refers to the information needs of a querying user; it is captured by the notion of ‘facet’. A focus refers to how diversity is captured from the documents as organized by the user; it provides a kind of context to the user query. The method is situated within the formal framework of the smallest propositionally closed description logic ALC, thereby betting that ALC provides us with a suitable SAT solver to implement a facet engine, which is the main component of our method.

The paper deals with developing stemming algorithms that could be applied to develop a search and retrieval system for digital documents in Telugu-a language belonging to the South-central branch of the Dravidian languages. A set of stemming algorithms is developed to index and search for documents in the Telugu language. The algorithms developed demonstrate successfully that stemming algorithms for Indian languages can be developed for increasing the search efficiency in Indian languages.

ABSTRACT Discovery tools for scholarly information have largely depended upon free-text search engines until the arrival of Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH)-based services. OAI-based service providers are meant to provide a metadata-based unified search for widely distributed scholarly resources. While the proliferation of OAI-PMH-compliant repositories is a welcome development, its overall adoption in these primary resources has been slow. Compared to the vast number of active peer-reviewed journals available today, very few of them expose their metadata through the OAI interface. The publishers have been promoting their publications through various web-based media including email alerts, RSS feeds, and an online table of contents. This paper describes an experiment that exploits these non-OAI Web-based sources for extracting metadata, which can be used in enhancing an OAI-based service provider.
