The mutual influences of wheat selenium (Se) and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) on plasma Se and indicators of increased oxidative stress were investigated in a randomized, double-blind study with 31 women (23.5 +/- 3.4 yr). Groups 1 and 2 ingested 5.4 g n-3 PUFA daily (as ethyl esters), whereas groups 3 and 4 received placebo capsules. Groups 2 and 3 received 3 slices of high-Se bread daily, providing 115 micrograms Se, in addition to the 77 +/- 26 micrograms Se in the diet. Groups 1 and 4 received placebo slices. Blood samples were drawn at baseline and at 3 and 6 wk. Serum Se concentrations increased in both groups given Se-enriched bread, but significantly less in subjects given n-3 PUFA (group 2). There were no changes in the plasma ratio alpha-tocopherol:mg cholesterol or plasma ascorbic acid levels. In order to investigate varietal adaptation and changes over time in Australian lupin breeding, 54 historical variety trials in WA, NSW and Victoria, comprising all narrow-leafed cultivars released since 1967 were subject to G × E analysis. This study describes an experimental analysis of a five-fold plant-insect interaction, with the primary aim of determining the net effect of insect-insect interactions on the host plant. The participlants are the extrafloral nectary-bearing host plant Acacia decurrens; the resident sap-sucking membracid treehopper Sextius virescens; the ant Iridomyrmex sp. which attends both EFN and treehoppers; external herbivores including grasshoppers and gall wasps; and predators and parasitoids of the membracids. The main results are as follows. 1. The membracids alone decrease plant growth and seed set. 2. In the absence of membracids, the ants defend the plant against external herbivores, and their presence increases plant growth and seed set. 3. The interaction between ants and membracids exerts an overall negative effect on plant growth and seed set. This has not been demonstrated for any system previously and is the main result of the study. 4. Ant attendance does not increase membracid populations or feeding rates significantly, or reduce mid-season mortality. 5. Ant attendance decreases late-season membracid mortality significantly. This has been shown previously for Lepidoptera and nymphal Homoptera only. 6. The mechanism of the interactive effect in (3) is apparently that the honeydewsecreting membracids attract the ants away from the EFN and decrease the efficacy of the plant's ant defence.

The effects of plantain starch obtained from the unripe fruit of the plantMusa paradisiaca L. (Musaceae) on the mechanical and disintegration properties of paracetamol tablets have been investigated in comparison with the effects of corn starch BP using a 23 factorial experimental design. The individual and combined effects of nature of starch binder (N), concentration of starch binder (C), and the relative density of tablet (RD) on the tensile strength (TS), brittle fracture index (BFI), and disintegration time (DT) of the tablets were investigated. The ranking of the individual effects on TS was RD>C≫N, on BFI was C≫RD>N and on DT was N>C>RD. The ranking for the interaction effects on TS and DT was N-C≫N-RD>C-RD, while that on BFI was N-C≫C-RD>N-RD. Changing nature of starch from a “low” (plantain starch) to a “high” (corn starch) level, increasing the concentration of starch binding agent from 2.5% to 10.0% wt/wt, and increasing relative density of the tablet from 0.80 to 0.90, led to increase in the values of TS and DT, but a decrease in BFI. Thus, tablets containing plantain starch had lower tensile strength and disintegration time values than those containing corn starch, but showed better ability to reduce the lamination and capping tendency in paracetamol tablet formulation. The interaction between N and C was significantly (P<.001) higher than those between N and RD and between C and RD. There is therefore the need to carefully choose the nature (N) and concentration (C) of starch used as binding agent in tablet formulations to obtain tablets of desired bond strength and disintegration properties. Furthermore, plantain starch could be useful as an alternative binding agent to cornstarch, especially where faster disintegration is required and the problems of lamination and capping are of particular concern.

Wetlands dominated by Swamp Paperbarks (Melaleuca spp., Myrtaceae) are common in coastal regions across Australia. Many of these wetlands have been filled in for coastal development or otherwise degraded as a consequence of altered water regimes and increased salinity. Substantial resources, often involving community groups, are now being allocated to revegetating the remaining wetland sites, yet only rarely is the effectiveness of the rehabilitation strategies or on-ground procedures robustly assessed. As part of a larger project investigating the condition and rehabilitation of brackish-water wetlands of the Gippsland Lakes, we overlaid a scientifically informed experimental design on a set of community-based planting trials to test the effects of water depth, microtopography, plant age and planting method on the survival and growth of seedlings of Melaleuca ericifolia Sm. in Dowd Morass, a degraded, Ramsar-listed wetland in south-eastern Australia. Although previous laboratory and greenhouse studies have shown M. ericifolia seedlings to be salt tolerant, the strongly interactive effects of waterlogging and salinity resulted in high seedling mortality (>90%) in the field-based revegetation trials. Seedlings survived best if planted on naturally raised hummocks vegetated with Paspalum distichum L. (Gramineae), but their height was reduced compared with seedlings planted in shallowly flooded environments. Age of plants and depth of water were important factors in the survival and growth of M. ericifolia seedlings, whereas planting method seemed to have little effect on survival. Improved testing of revegetation methods and reporting of success or otherwise of revegetation trials will improve the effectiveness and accountability of projects aiming to rehabilitate degraded coastal wetlands.

A computation and experimental study of dam-water-foundation interaction conducted at Longyangxia Dam in China is described. In the primary tests, the dam and its retained water were excited by detonating large explosive charges in shallow water upstream from the dam. The dam and water responses to the ex- plosives were recorded by accelerometers, pressure sensors, and three-component seismographs. In sec- ondary tests, the average reflection coefficient of the reservoir boundaries was measured using a newly developed procedure based on the acoustic reverberation concept. The results obtained indicate that ex- plosive detonations appear to be the best means for exciting the dam-water-foundation system, and that an acoustic reverberation technique offers a practical procedure for measuring the overall reflection coeffi- cient for the entire reservoir.
