About us

Our sector makes an incredible difference to the world, but it’s shrouded in unhelpful traditions, outdated measures of impact and barriers to participation. That’s why since we launched our Real Impact Manifesto in 2018, we’ve been calling out problems in the sector and changing how we work. We’re seeing green shoots of progress, but significant change will require the entire sector to commit and act. So, here in 2022, we’re relaunching our Real Impact Manifesto and asking you to join us in working towards a fairer, more equitable environment where research can have a real-world impact and those within it can reach their full potential.

Yesterday was World Environment Day, so it seems fitting that we highlight our next 2023 Real Impact Award winners who are tackling the pressing challenges of the global climate crisis and driving real impact. The team behind the UQ Low Harm Hedonism Initiative at The University of Queensland and WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) are harnessing their research to take pragmatic steps in reducing the environmental impact caused by tourism. By applying theory with practice and measuring performance in real-time, the initiative has made significant and immediate strides in reducing excessive waste and energy consumption. In helping tourism businesses to operate in more environmentally sustainable ways, their impressive efforts clearly align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 12; Sustainable Consumption and Production). It's why they were awarded winners of the Driving the Impact Agenda category. Read their full story, here: https://bit.ly/4ec7r1u #RealImpactAwards #AreYouInForChange #SDGs #SDG12 #Sustainability #

To mark World Environment Day 2024, we’re taking part in an Emerald Offline Oasis. The challenge is to collectively avoid using online tools like search engines for 24 hours to reduce energy consumption. Following our Offline Oasis, we’ll use some industry calculations to estimate the total CO2, power, and water savings we’ve made. The theme of this year’s World Environment Day focuses on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. We spoke to some of our ambassadors from around the world to discuss the importance of World Environment Day. Thank you to John Ure for joining us for a Q&A in-person at our Leeds office and online today. Hosted by Katy Mathers, Senior Books Commissioning Editor at Emerald, the Q&A session was a chance for the Emerald team to learn more about John’s forthcoming book ‘Achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Late or Too Late?’ John is an academic turned consultant for UN agencies such as the World Bank, the IFC, the ITU, UNDP, UNESCAP, and more. The book is an accessible contemporary account of a fast-developing field of literature, evidence, and science around the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). John’s book divides the SDGs into four core themes – poverty, environment, civil society, and global partnerships. John delves into the current status of each goal, identifying the main challenges to be overcome and examining what we can be doing to get there. During the Q&A, John commented: “My book is trying to get people to think of ways in which progress can be made towards these goals. The existential crisis that everyone in the world and every organic being on the globe faces is pretty undeniable and that has to be addressed.” John explained how his book is accessible to people outside academia: “I think my style of writing isn’t too academic. I hope it will get a reputation of being attractive to people who are not specialists, but who've got enough interest in these things to read it, talk about it, recommend it, and share it.” At Emerald, we’re passionate about leading change and aligning with the SDGs. Today’s session was a great opportunity for our team to get a fantastic insight into what it means when we say we want to take measurable actions that will have a positive impact on society. ‘Achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Late or Too Late?’ by John Ure is available to preorder now and is published by Emerald on Tuesday 15th October 2024.
