Harry and Meghan's tour of Nigeria shows 'what could have been' according to royal author

Royal author Tina Brown says the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's visit to Nigeria has shown "what could have been" had the couple not resigned as working members of the British monarchy.

Speaking to BBC, Brown said watching Prince Harry and Meghan had her feeling "nostalgic".

"I felt 'this is what it could have been,' these two who are enormously appealing to the public and who are very good at it," Brown said.

"What a pity it is they've gone."

She said there is a "Harry-shaped hole in the monarchy at this time when there is such beleaguered circumstances".

Brown however worries the rift with the royals "might be" permanent as time passes because "things tend to get more and more ossified."

"But I think we needed Harry and Meghan," Brown explained.

"And I think unfortunately what's come to pass with the cancer and the darkness and this is how depleted the family is, and how much it needs all its stalwarts.

Brown says she hopes the rift isn't permanent.

"I'm hoping that it does mend," she added.

Harry recently travelled to the UK for a service of thanksgiving upon the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, and was reportedly told his father King Charles would be too busy to meet with him.

A spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex addressed the matter via a statement given to media, including the Telegraph UK.

"In response to the many inquiries and continued speculation on whether or not the duke will meet with his father while in the UK this week, it, unfortunately, will not be possible due to His Majesty's full program," it read.

"The Duke of course is understanding of his father's diary of commitments and various other priorities and hopes to see him soon."
