How to create a new chapter

First, you should take a look at the Local chapter FAQ to understand what a local chapter is, and what it entails to create a new chapter.

Then you have to go through the following steps:

Legal
you will need bylaws, which have to be drafted according to non-profit organisation bylaws in place in your country.
bylaws have to be translated into English and presented to the Wikimedia Foundation Board
Once accepted, you can create your chapter.
Name
The name of the chapter will have to be "Wikimedia" and the name of the country it is being created in.
Roles
Most non-profit organisations have a board and defined roles. Typical roles include:
  • chairperson
  • secretary
  • treasurer
  • press officer

Adapt those to your country and legal basis.

You should consider having at least 20 interested people to create a chapter.

Finances
Make a budget to see how much you need for starting and if need be, try your hand at fundraising to start your chapter.
