The easy access to new technologies had transformed language teaching and learning in more ways than we can count it. Watching documentaries can keep students engaged and motivated. Film documentaries are highly authentic materials that can be an excellent learning tool in Arabic language learning classes. Although Arabic is a major world language of the 21st Century, with increasing numbers of people around the world choosing to study it, teachers and learners engaged in Arabic language programmes face many well documented challenges. In this conference we will explore the role that creativity may take in addressing these challenges and celebrate the innovative practices of Arabic language teachers around the world. It will bring together distinguished Arabic experts, researchers and practitioners as well as world renowned speakers from related fields.

The conference aims to bring together educators, academics as well as professionals in the field of teacher’s training.

The conference will focus on the following four areas:

    Teaching Arabic in Context
    Pedagogical Approaches to Arabic Diglossia and Language Variation
    Programme design and curriculum alignment
    Approaches to Assessment, the Common European Framework of Reference

The Arab Media Centre's (University of Westminster) 2th international conference, 'Mapping Cultural Policy in the Arab Region', aims to bring together academics, artists, policymakers, activists and civil society groups to discuss the role of ‘culture’ and ‘cultural policy’ in the Arab region within a context that takes into account the recent historical and political events that are reshaping the region’s societies, economies and culture industries.

Looking ahead to a post-oil future, Gulf states have for more than a decade been systematically investing in 'culture' or what is known as the ‘creative’ economy. In Arab countries that saw regime change since the uprisings of 2010, cultural policy constitutes an indispensable tool of struggle for both revolutionary and anti-revolutionary forces. And while the politics of difference and representation have resurfaced as a key and contentious issue in several Arab countries, Arab youth and subcultures, alienated by state-owned cultural institutions and the private culture industry sectors, have sought DIY strategies and independent sources of funding to give voice to new and alternative artistic forms of expression, including performative arts, experimental film and music.

The Conference is designed to offer a platform for teachers, students and research scholars of Arabic language, culture, literature, linguistics and translation from the United Kingdom and beyond, to exchange ideas, share good practice and disseminate their scholarship and research to a wider audience. It also aims at facilitating greater collaboration and links between teachers, students and scholars in the field in the UK and abroad.
