This week's Attention Matters newsletter by Matt Locke looks at attribution and distribution on the web. "But now we’re potentially entering the post-cookie era, the marketing industry is abuzz with conversation about zero party data - this is user data voluntarily given by your audience in response to surveys, questions or other contributions. This encourages brands to built direct connections with the audience, ask them questions that create value for the user as well as the brand, and then use the results to convert sales that can be directly attributed to the content the user engages with. If this is the future of digital marketing, it’s a remarkable about turn, in which the best strategy is to own as much of the user journey from distribution to attribution as possible. The problem is, that isn’t going to be easy to do at the kind of (illusory) scale the digital marketing industry has been used to over the last few decades." Storythings reposted this
We commissioned six essays that were published in the Digital Works Conference printed programme, we are now also publishing them on the Substrakt website. The first essay we're sharing is from Storythings Director, Matt Locke. In his essay (https://lnkd.in/ecNQApCH), Matt examines the shifts in the ways that people find and access content and experiences online. Matt's view is that we are moving into the 'third era' of the web, and this presents opportunities (and challenges) for publishers to rethink how they build relationships with their audience. "We’re just about on the cusp between the end of the second era of the web, and the beginning of the third. Each era has been driven by a new technology that has changed the way that we find, share and use information. [...] Perhaps, in the next era of the web, we need to be a bit more humble. The numbers you’ll get will not be as big. This will be hard to communicate to stakeholders who have got used to five, six, or seven figure numbers. But as the technology ethnographer Tricia Wang said in an essay back in 2013, the peak of Web 2.0, we need thick data, not big data - “What is measurable is not the same as what is valuable.”" https://lnkd.in/ecNQApCH

This week, in Episode 5 of Phoenixed: what we often see governments do - no one wanted to be held accountable for the pay disaster in Canada. And then? Listen to Episode 5, The Fallout, of Phoenixed, our podcast for Global Payroll Association (GPA) and Melanie Pizzey 🟣🟣🟣. Grace Dobush, Tobin Ng, Glen McGregor
Episode 5 is out today! The Fallout https://lnkd.in/d5PpfAUp. As the Phoenix pay system disaster hit major news, politicians treated responsibility for the failed implementation like a hot potato. No one was prepared to step up and be held accountable. While Phoenix was being lampooned on national television, employees were fighting to have their voices heard at the highest levels and then the “incomprehensible failure” was finally called out. Listen today! https://lnkd.in/d5PpfAUp.
