Description

Readers are interested in finding content they are looking for. MVP of Quickview/Search Preview panel is to help surface key information of a result in a quickview panel the special:search page to increase discoverability and make relevance judgment easier for readers. This is integrated in the existing user flow: a user gets to the special:search page after, for example, doing a search in the go bar and not getting an exact article match. User gets an option to explore a quickview panel for a search result displaying with key information with a possibility of a click through.

The quickview panel visually separates information specific to an individual search result (e.g. table of contents, metadata, interwiki links, etc), from information about search itself: e.g. sister search, which searches for the same query on different projects; number of results; Did You Mean suggestions; etc. Quickview is a drilldown into a specific search result.

Use Cases

As a reader, I want to get better discoverability of content through relevant information from articles being surfaced to find what I am looking for.

Requirements

Each search result can be expanded into a quickview panel, which shows information specific to that search result
User can click through on a search result to go to the article without going to a quickview panel

Click through a bit of content in a quickview panel can bring to:
- Top of an article page for titles, place in the article where the image exists for images, etc.
- A section of an article (article section match - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T306630 )
- Page of a wiki project https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T307085
Quickview panel does not create regression for contributors (TBD)
Quickview panel does not slow down mobile experience: quickview load time (OUT of scope for QuickView MVP first phase)
People have an option to turn off the quickview panel https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T311667
