The new building for Powerhouse Arts, Inc. opened over one year ago to an audience of artists, local partners, non-profits, and collaborators. Since then, it has integrated within the Gowanus neighborhood, becoming a vital resource for the arts and cultural community. In recognition of its success, Powerhouse Arts was recently awarded the AIANY Design Award and the Lucy G. Moses 2024 Preservation Award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy. Our projects for the Stadtcasino Basel and Christoph Merian Stiftung are part of the Prix Lignum 2024 for timber construction. The Prix Lignum honours innovative, high-quality and forward-looking use of wood in buildings, interior design, furniture and artistic works. The headquarters for the CMS is a sustainable timber structure that references the original wooden courtyard buildings in the St. Alban neighborhood of Basel. At the extension to the Stadtcasino Basel, wood is used as part of the historically sensitive facade and for various interior elements. More information and voting below. Bélair-Monange was designed to not only meet the functional needs of the winery’s staff, but to also be a site where vinicultural knowledge and expertise is cultivated and shared, thus contributing to the cultural development of the Saint-Émilion region. The FORUM UZH houses part of the University of Zurich’s faculties of law, economics, and new philology, located on the top four floors of the trapezoidal solitaire building and organized around a shared atrium and inner courtyard. The library and learning center, as well as a double height reading room, are located on the lower levels. An efficient floorplan and ample daylight allow for flexible use of the building. Wood is the main material, with concrete limited to the cores and base. Horizontal panels and a brise-soleil provide shading. Depending on the point of view and the time of day, the building appears stony and heavy or transparent and light. On top of the building, a densely planted green roof with a photovoltaic array integrates into the city landscape of Zurich. In 2018 H&dM won the competition for FORUM UZH with the vision of a university open to the city. The ‘forum’ (highlighted in pink) is the multi-functional center of the building: a large hall where university and public life takes place, connecting the building from bottom to top and providing orientation, access, and lighting. In certain areas, the forum extends five storeys high and continues outside as a garden—a piece of forest in the middle of the university. The forum is a lounge, meeting space, and workspace all in one, suitable for university events as well as exhibitions, concerts, or festivals. Five lecture halls are arranged on different levels—the forum is their common foyer. Each has a specific typology: round, oval, and polygonal halls feature flexible stages that support communal learning and enable hybrid teaching. We are excited to announce that FORUM UZH has received its building permit. Our project for a new education and research building for the University of Zurich is in the heart of Zurich’s city center, opposite UZH’s historic main building. It creates space for 6,000 people to study, research, and work. The campus, perched above Zurich's old city, is characterized by classicist buildings set back from the street that respond to the rise and fall of the topography with plinths and terraces. Spacious halls (e.g. the Lichthof in the main building) foster the identity of institutions from within. The FORUM UZH is an embodiment of these urban and interior typologies: plinth, stand-alone solitaire, and forum. The solitaire is set back from the street to create a generous urban square—the Gloriaterrasse—that will be open to the city. Sunlit and densely planted, this square extends the adjacent Gloriapark, significantly increasing green space in the center of Zurich. Entrances on the sides of the plinth directly connect sports halls, dining, and shops with the neighborhood. Wichtiger Meilenstein für das neue Bildungs- und Forschungszentrum der Universität Zürich: Die Baubewilligung für das «FORUM UZH» ist nun rechtskräftig. Damit kann der Baubeginn Ende August 2024 starten. Der Bezug des Neubaus ist Mitte 2030 vorgesehen. Das «FORUM UZH» wird modernen Lehr- und Lernformen gerecht und stärkt die Position der Universität im wissenschaftlichen Wettbewerb. Neben neuen Flächen für Lehre, Forschung und Bibliothek, wird es öffentliche Verpflegungsorte, Sportflächen und Gewerbeflächen für Drittmieter geben. Besonders stolz sind wir auf die Nachhaltigkeit des Projekts. Die Holz-Beton-Hybridbauweise reduziert die CO2-Emissionen beim Bau deutlich und verbessert die Aufenthaltsqualität in den Innenräumen. Die Dachfläche wird als fünfte Fassade gestaltet, mit einer Photovoltaikanlage und Pflanzen, die zu einem positiven Stadtklima beitragen und Lebensraum für Insekten bieten. Das FORUM UZH ist mehr als ein Gebäude – es verbindet Mensch und Raum, Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft, inspiriert das einzigartige Hochschulgebiet im Herzen von Zürich und steht für die kontinuierliche Weiterentwicklung der Universität im Hinblick auf künftige Generationen.
