Developed in the 1970s to allow telecoms firms to exchange data to set up and manage calls, ss7 has more users than the internet. Security was not a big issue when ss7 was first introduced because only a few fixed-line operators could get access to the system. That changed in the mobile age. Read this story to learn why the protocol is vulnerable and how phone users can protect themselves against ss7-based eavesdropping (to some extent). https://econ.st/3wYZ74j #cybercrime #hacking #technews #cybersecurity

In light of recent reporting about #Microsoft #Recall and plans for its AI Explorer, I believe it is worth re-reading the ACM, Association for Computing Machinery Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct: https://lnkd.in/eynYHSFF , paying special attention to: 1.2 Avoid harm 1.6 Respect privacy 1.7 Honor confidentiality 2.9 Design and implement systems that are robustly and usably secure 3.1 Ensure that the public good is the central concern during all professional computing work 3.7 Recognize and take special care of systems that become integrated into the infrastructure of society All computing professionals including those who work at #Microsoft have an ethical obligation to society, their fellow citizens, and themselves. It's past time to do a gut check and some soul searching about whether this company really is behaving ethically when it comes to their deployments of #AI . Speaking personally, it's very difficult for me to see how deployment of a technology like this does not run afoul of at least one, if not many, of the ACM's ethical guidelines I listed above. At the very least, #Microsoft owes all of us significant and credible assurances that it will not, especially given point 3.7 and the widespread use of Microsoft products in educational and government institutions. Recall as described is not just another product. It's a vast surveillance infrastructure that generates a new class of harm that we haven't encountered before. Your account usernames and passwords, bank records and other sensitive documents, medical records, appointments, personal photos and more could be swept up into an AI-powered database and become easily searchable by anyone who gains access to your computer. Ransomware attacks and viruses would become orders of magnitude more devastating were this technology deployed widely. Untrustworthy family members in domestic abuse situations already pry into their victims' computers; imagine what they could do with a tool like this at their fingertips. A bit of extra convenience searching your computer is nowhere near worth taking on additional dangers of this magnitude society-wide, in my view, not without a careful examination and strategy for mitigating them.
The Code affirms an obligation of computing professionals to use their skills for the benefit of society.

This March, the state of Florida passed a law banning social media for under-14s. Britain’s government is reportedly considering a ban on mobile-phone sales to under-16s.
