The title of this book is somewhat misleading. I purchased this book more for the beauty recipes, health benefits, and history than for anything else. For that content, I would only give it a generous three stars, perhaps not even that. There are ONLY six recipes for skin/hair care (2 face, 2 body, 1 feet, 1 hair). The health section largely cites research and generalizations, giving only two recipes, though one is just a spoonful of honey to soothe a sore throat so that might not really count. I suppose I was hoping for something more along the lines of honey and lemon juice in warm water in the mornings sort of folk medicine, which is what the title suggests. Mixtures with essential oils or herbs would have been good. So if you're looking for a perfect face mask recipe (yogurt and honey is a good one) or something more spa-oriented ("Natural Beauty" by Elizabeth TenHouten has a wonderful honey, milk, and warm water foot soak recipe, for instance) this book will disappoint. In the only mix for hair it doesn't even mention that honey will actually lighten your hair color when mixed with water if it isn't heated first! "75 Recipes" yes, "Remedies and Natural Treatments" not so much. Better luck with a Google search.

However, I did bump this book up to four stars because it does have a lot of edible recipes. While the title of this book does not really suggest that it would be much of a cookbook (I know it says "Cooking Well" in the title, but heating honey in water for a hair treatment could qualify as cooking) that's actually what it is. While Chapter One's "Story of Honey" is a mere lone page, followed by another couple of pages of honey variety descriptions that may or may not be of use to you, Chapter Three's "Honey and Beauty" is a scant two pages long, Chapter Four's "The Recipes" comprises 115 pages which is the bulk of the book. Breakfast, appetizers & dips, main dishes, salads and dressings, snacks, side dishes, and desserts are all packed into this book and provided by The National Honey Board. I was surprised at the variety of dishes and mix of flavors presented, all fairly straight-forward to make. It does have a handy little table listing different honeys and their recommended uses for red meat, shellfish, desserts, etc. as well as a guide to substituting honey for sugar in other dishes. Tonight I tried the "Firecracker Shrimp" recipe on page 78 and it was quite good! Soy sauce and honey? I had my doubts, but it was well-received by my family. There are many others I'll be trying in the future, I'm sure, which is why I did give it four stars.

To sum up, if you're looking for a cookbook for honey, buy this book. If you're looking for a strictly health and beauty book featuring honey, look elsewhere.

Book Review Honey for Health & Beauty

Honey has been a remedy I've known and used for years. But, Honey for Health & Beauty, part of the Cooking Well series, is a treasure.

It is a cooperative effort with the Introduction by Lauren Feder, M.D., Foreword by Marie-Annick Courtier and Recipes from The National Honey Board. This combined effort contains over 75 recipes, remedies and natural treatments, backed up by studies.

As Lauren Feder, M.D. said, "After reading Honey for Health & Beauty, I am now enthusiastic to increase the use of honey in some of my favorite dishes, as well as a healing agent."

Chef Marie-Annick Courtier provides tremendous insight and says, "You need to educate yourself and your palate as you would with wine. Color, concentration, viscosity, aroma, taste, finish and complexity are the most important elements in defining the best honey."

The book starts off telling the story of honey and provides all sorts of tips. Next, a fascinating chapter follows on how honey helps with health and healing. This is documented with medical studies.

How honey has been and currently is used for beauty is amazing, The book includes beauty recipes created by Christopher Watt, a licensed aesthetician. Christopher's clients include Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez. The Rosemary Honey Hair Conditioner is one I know I'll try.

Food recipes cover the full gamut of creating healthy, delicious dishes from breakfasts to desserts, peppered with valuable tips.

This 150 page book is easy and interesting to read, a great reference, and packed full of recipes that are easy to prepare. I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

This Book is Exactly What The Author Promises

This is a good book of natural honey remedies and recipes. The entire book is well designed, at a fair price of $11.00, it's a nice recipe book for a niche use.

I tried the "Honey of A Chili" recipe and it was very good.

The only drawbacks that I saw were:

1. I thought the first section was too short

2. The second chapter, on honey's healing properties and powerful antioxidant components was absolutely fascinating and should have been expanded.

When I read the part about how a spoonful of honey can actually help prevent sickness in children, I went out the same day to a local Beekeeping supply store and purchased two jars of local (raw) honey and a slab of honeycomb.

A good book, but I would have liked a bit more on the healing properties of honey, which could have easily been done by shrinking the large font that was used for the recipes, or just putting more than one recipie on a single page, since some of them were just a few lines of directions.
