Hard-Boiled Kindle Edition
Ted Huston has a gambling problem. A bad gambling problem. He owes one of the city's most notorious bookies more than $75,000. When the bookmaker's grandson is critically injured by a hit-and-run driver, the ex-cop Huston is given a choice: find the driver and deliver him for punishment -- or come up with the money.

HARD-BOILED by Doug Ross is just plain fun! Reminded me of being a kid and hiding my Mickey Spillane's from my mom. Well written, funny, fast paced, good plot and great characters with a surprise ending that leaves you yearning for more pages to turn. Ted Huston is just the kind of smart, wise guy private we all like to see. Hope Mr. Ross will keep `em coming.

I have recently enjoyed the novella Hard-Boiled. It reminds me of a Dresden Files type book minus the magic. The story is captivating and the characters are developed quickly and fully. Hope to see another soon.

I can't add to the great reviews already written here, as they have pointed out the amazing efforts of Mr. Ross in this often neglected genre. The writing style, the suspense, the subplots all make it a serious page-turner. and the biggest twist, which the reader may start detecting as a 'gut feeling', leads our hero full circle, so to speak, to the place where we first met him. Like others, I do hope that there sill be a series of these, as this character is much too good to fade away after one appearance.

A fine piece of work from a new writer. Ross's pacing couldn't be swifter, and he touches all the mandatory bases of the "hardboiled detective" genre of mystery fiction in the proper sequence. At times his prose pushes the Chandleresque pedal a bit too hard - by the way, Mr. Ross, if you're going to hunt penguins, prefer the Antarctic to the Arctic - but all the same, he's produced a thoroughly enjoyable novella and one that suggests more to come, whether with the endearingly fractured Ted as his protagonist or a whole new cast.

I haven't read it. It doesn't seem to work on my kindle. Once I open it, I can only get out by going to the end of the story, not by the double tap other kindle books use.

Doug Ross' first novel barrels down the tracks at full speed, like something by Mickey Spillane out of Janet Evanovich. Ross' characters are well-defined and scene descriptions are vivid. There's a deft turn of phrase (e.g. "the siren song of cholesterol") on almost every page and the plot is quirky and engaging.
"Hard Boiled" is a bargain at 99 cents. Where else can you get a couple of hours of great entertainment for that price?

I hate how amazon forces you to write a 20 word review when you only want to leave a star rating.

The title describes the book. It is a hard boiled mystery like Mickey Spillane would write. Entertaining read, and well worth the 99 cents.
Ted Houston is an ex cop who owns the local gambling man $75K. Needless to say Ted has a real gambling problem. When the son of the man running the gambling disappears, Ted is given a chance to get him back and not pay he $75K.
Interesting tough guy novel with good guys and bad guys and a moll as all Hard Boiled novels should have.
