In this way they will be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks them the reason of their hope, with meekness and fear (cf. 1 Peter 3: 15-16).-Bishop Athanasius Schneider, from the ForewordFor the first time, St. Robert Bellarmine’s long Catechism, written in the form of a dialogue, has been made available in the English Language.This Catechism was composed by St. Robert Bellarmine in 1598 and received Papal approbation from several Popes, most notably Pope Clement VIII and one of the greatest theologians to ever sit on the throne of St. Peter, Pope Benedict XIV. It was translated into Latin for use throughout the Church and has run through a number of editions throughout the centuries. Being written as a dialogue, it goes beyond the rote memorization of other catechisms (including that of Baltimore) by giving a deep explanation of the teachings of the faith with comparisons and parables.What is wholesome about this Catechism is not only the soundness of its doctrine, but the warmth that a great theologian that was accustomed to dealing with complicated matters of theology descends to lovingly explain the basic truths of faith in a manner that average laity can easily understand. It is not for nothing that St. Robert was made the Patron of all Catechists!

We use this book as a family teaching our 13, 11 and 7 yr old the faith

This book is FANTASTIC. In a way it's a bit like the Baltimore Catechism in that it is written in a question and answer format. Each lesson is generally very brief, about two pages and gives you several discussion questions, followed by the answer. What we do is we read the question and then let the kids attempt to answer it starting with the youngest and moving to the oldest (parents included) BEFORE we read the actual answer. The kids seem to love this method. Since we are all converts from Protestantism, (ages 7, 11, 13, 46 and 48) this is super helpful. For instance, the first question was "What is Christian Doctrine?" and the second follow up Question was "What principal parts of this doctrine are most important?" Now my Protestant mind interpreted this as "What must I do to be saved?" But the Catholic answer entails not simply what you must do to become a Christian, but what one must believe and practice to remain a Christian until death or Christ's return. Because the Catholic world view is akin to St. Paul's vision of "running the race" or "fighting the good fight" and thus persevering until the end. So long story short I forgot how essential the seven sacraments are in providing the Grace necessary to persevere in one's faith. Typical newbie error I suppose. So, if you are used to wishy washy, not so solid, social justice infused cathechism, then you might just love this shot in the arm of authentic, time tested Catholic Doctrine from a doctor of the church written at a time when the church was responding to the Protestant Reformation. St. Robert Bellarmine doubles down and tells you straight up what the church has always taught and continues to hold true....even if it doesn't get printed in every RCIA booklet.
