CAROL SLOANE / LIVE BIRDLAND Singer Carol Sloane started singing professionally when she was 14 and at 18 she toured Germany in a musical comedy. She was with the Les and Larry Elgart orchestra during 1958-1960 and, after appearing at a jazz festival in 1960, she was heard by Jon Hendricks who later sent for her to sub for Annie Ross with Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. Sloane made a big impression at the 1961 Newport Jazz Festival and soon cut two records for Columbia.

Tip-Top Work from a Jazz Legend

If this CD is to be Carol Sloane’s valedictory, it represents absolutely top work from this unique singer. Her swinging sense of time, warmth, thoughtful and imaginative interpretations of quality songs, and the inborn beauty of her speaking and singing voice (only lightly, lovingly burnished by time) are all present and accounted for in this live jazz set. She can be very proud of this album that represents her as well as anything she has ever recorded. Her charming way of slipping back in for another chorus after an instrumental solo is here in full force along with some high notes I’ve never heard from her before. They seemed to surprise even her.
This is subtle, quiet music, not to be played in the background. So put it on, turn it up nice and loud and sit back with at least a cool drink and you will experience exactly the feeling of being in a good seat enjoying a flawless intimate jazz performance in a top New York club.

Warm, happy and traditional jazz at its best. Buy it. You won’t be disappointed.
