Not seen it talked here but in Romania, due to mining, water started turning red. The company that did the work, is actually Canadian. The water started looking like this

Now, this is because of cyanide. If you search about cyanide poisoning you’ll see that the bear had the same symptoms described, and it will explain the red river.

I couldn’t find anything about effects of eating tainted meat, but acute exposure can lead to seizures, confusion, dizziness, etc. Which explains a lot of what is happening to the girls, especially combine with trauma and hunger, which will lead to mass paranoia, and so on.

I’m a lover of horror and all for the supernatural element, but I did a deep dive on the above and it was all so logical haha

This was where I was going. The birds all dying made me think of pollution or some effect - then the deer with the worms, the bear, the red river - Im sure the showrunners will have their explanation -

Children, teenagers tend to believe in the boogeyman or dark spirits - when 99% of the time there is a logical explanation

Not an expert on the Canadian resource extraction policy, but would a mining operation really be in the deep wilderness with no roads or any sign of civilization, outside of an old hunting cabin?

I posted about this yesterday that there are lost Spanish mines hidden all over North America and this guy went to search for one near Pitt lake in Canada, and he found a cabin they think belonged to a guy who they think previously found a gold mine, but he killed his wives to keep them from telling anyone about it. Since they put that “cabin guy” in prison, he never told where it was. Maybe if it was a really old abandoned mine it would be poisoning the land and animals, and the I think the symbols are a map to the hidden mine, that Javi found it, or part of it, and that the cult spot might also be a cover for Lottie finding a mine there too. If they were being poisoned by these mines, that could explain seeing things that aren’t real too.

I also wonder if dark Tai has been in the mine already while sleepwalking, and she told Javi not to come back. Javi would be freaked out if dark Tai was coming around to the mine at night, telling him don’t come back, and then suddenly is chasing him down and bringing him back.

In Romania it had pretty devastating effects, and the water could run miles on end. The girls also walked some time to find it, as it doesn’t seem to be on Nat’s map

I’m no expert either tho! But just a fun “scientific” explanation haha

The mining wouldn’t be, but the polluted waters should be. Tech is in SE BC, and the effects of the resource extraction run far.

Absolutely

Just to clarify: Chronic cyanide poisoning can occur if you’re exposed to 20 to 40 parts per million (ppm) of hydrogen cyanide over a substantial period of time. Symptoms are often gradual and increase in severity as time goes on.

Early symptoms may include:

  • headache

  • drowsiness

  • nausea

  • vomiting

  • vertigo

  • bright red flush

Additional symptoms may include:

  • dilated pupils

  • clammy skin

  • slower, shallower breaths

  • weaker, more rapid pulse

  • convulsions

If the condition remains undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to:

  • slow, irregular heart rate

  • reduced body temperature

  • blue lips, face, and extremities

  • coma

  • death

Honestly I do not think the girls are suffering from anything related to cyanide poisoning. As long as they are eating they are staying strong.

I don’t think the girls are suffering from chronic cyanide poisoning. For something to be chronic, it has to happen for a very long period of time.

I mentioned acute poisoning in the bear, which would explain the lethargic state, panting, and would eventually lead to death.

Me thinking that the girls are poisoned is if they would eat the tainted meat. However since I posted above comment, I have spoken to my mum who is a pharmacist. Cyanide does not stay long in the body so eating the bear meat (if contaminated) would probably cause any effects, especially since they were eating small portions.

However, long term effects of exposure also includes brain damage.

“Survivors of significant cyanide exposure may develop heart, brain, and nerve damage.”

I would expect at least to see a few survivors having serious health issues tho, which we have not seen.

But I thought this was an interesting real world example that could explain both the river and the bear (potentially even the deer and the birds).

I do believe that we’ll never actually find out if it’s real or supernatural because this unknown raises both the tension and horror. And I personally don’t want to know haha.
