Assassin's Creed Origins: Community Critique Thread (E3)

// Official Discussion

This thread is for the AC reddit community to provide any and all critiques of what we've seen so far. If I remember to, I will create another thread the next time we get a decent amount of information (most likely gamescom).

The devs definitely see what we say on the subreddit, so consider this your chance to talk to them

All these 'RPG elements' are really off putting to me. This is subjective but in a lot of games like these it feels like they just put that stuff in because games need that now. I hated it in the recent Tomb Raider. Constantly you were seeing +25XP on screen; killed an animal, picked up a piece of paper, initiated a mandatory story sequence, here's XP. I'm sure you'll be able to hide it but it's just one of many things. I don't need to be rewarded for every single thing I do. It feels patronising and it's not like my character is 'becoming more experienced'. I feel like it subconsciously encourages you to play a certain way to maximise XP gains and that just isn't good game design. If they need to have this stuff, I would rather they do it so at the end of the mission you are awarded with upgrade points or something instead of bombarding you with 'YOU GOT XP' constantly. You use that XP to get upgrades, might as well cut out the middle man.

I also dislike how many games have such a big focus on loot and gear now, you have to get the stuff with the best stats and you have to farm crafting materials for them and it's all just so... bleh. I didn't like it in Unity, Syndicate toned it down a little and it looks like this is going all in on it. I know that this sword is going to be better than that one, but I don't want to be dealing with rare drops, crafting recipes and all these fucking menus.

You can cut out another middle man honestly, in the old games like AC1 or 2, we got upgrades or new abilities for narrative reasons. Sometimes we got it as a reward for finishing the mission, sometimes we got them as tutorials in preparation for a mission. Either way, there wasn't an EXP bar attached to it.

I liked that so much more than unlocking abilities with a skill tree.

It wouldn't fit for this "Witcher-like" entry in the series. If you only gain ability points, and not xp, what's the incentive to do side-stuff (anyone here is probably gonna 100% the game even if rewarded with peanuts, but still) ? I think it's a good system. Just play the game, and lvl up no matter what you decide to do.

At first I disliked all the RPG Elements, however I have warmed to them now. I have come to accept that this new AC, is going to be completely different from what we are used to. And TBH, I think it's exactly what the franchise needs right now. If they reused elements from the previous games too much, it would become stale, and I think now is the perfect time to make these changes.
