I love the films, but I could also sit here all day typing out everything that’s wrong with them. I’ve always felt they got Aragorn’s character completely wrong and miscast him. Viggo plays a great hero but the movie Aragorn isn’t the book Aragorn.

"isn't book Aragorn" isn't the same as saying he's a bad Aragorn.

Things can be different, you know.

"isn't book Aragorn" isn't the same as saying he's a bad Aragorn.

But he is.

He's not a hero, leader, or well, anything. He has no reason to be where he is as he lacks any sort of motivation. One can argue "well, he wants to defeat Sauron". Ok, that is the stick pushing him, but that is hardly unique to him. Where is his carrot? He doesn't want to be king. He tries to push Arwen away. Hell, he doesn't want to do anything. He has no personal stake in any of this.

He is the same sort of pusillanimous individual I see everywhere. Whereas what he ostensibly based upon is what I aspire to be.

I think they managed to not make him too much of an archetype this way.

I don't think he's in any way the most compelling character in these films, but he works.
