REAL LIFE NIGHTMARE

Chilling tale of the real ‘Freddy Krueger’ who slaughtered four people in bid to be ‘most famous serial killer’

KNOWN as the "Freddy Krueger Killer" due to his obsession with Nightmare of Elm Street, Daniel Gonzalez wanted to the be known as Britain's most dangerous serial killer.

During his killing spree, the 25-year-old murdered four people and injured two in a frenzied attack that took place in London and in Sussex in September 2004.

Gonzalez was obsessed with 80s horror classic A Nightmare of Elm Street and was also a fan of slasher film Friday the 13th.

The twisted killer hailed the murders as one of the "best things" he did in his life and bragged about how much alike he was with Freddy in a series of letters he wrote addressing his alter ego "Zippy".

He was sentenced to life behind bars in 2006 - and took his own life while in Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital the following year.

The first attack happened in Hilsea, Portsmouth, when Gonzalez told 61-year-old Peter King who was walking his dog with his wife that he was going to kill him.

King survived after Gonzalez had come at him with a steak knife - and the killer fled the scene.

After failing to commit murder, he then travelled to Southwick, in West Sussex.

There he stabbed Marie Harding, 76, while wearing a hockey mask copying Jason Voorhees in the film Friday the 13th, before returning home to Woking.

The raging killer furiously reasoned that the reason he had failed to kill King was that his knife was too small.

Just two days later he fatally stabbed 46-year-old Kevin Molloy in Tottenham before forcibly entering Koumis Constantinou's home and stabbing him in the arm.

Koumis again survived the ordeal - but the twisted killer had been trying to randomly access houses.

His killing spree finished with the murder of elderly couple Derek and Jean Robinson in Highgate.

He later described the experience as "orgasmic".

Gonzalez was arrested just hours after the final attack at Tottenham Court Road tube station after buying a ticket with a bloodstained £20 note.

He was given six life sentences, while the judge recommended he should never be released.

His mum Lesley Savage said her son never received the help he needed over the years and said he had made "incessant pleas" for help to health services, social services and the police, BBC had reported at the time.

She had described him as "extremely intelligent but extremely disruptive".

"He could be absolutely charming but could also be manipulative. We had some terrible arguments," she said.

"Despite our incessant pleas to health services, social services and to the police, Daniel was often turned away, passed from one group of professionals to another and left without the support and help he so obviously and desperately needed."

Ms Savage even said that she was so desperate she had written a letter to social services, asking: "Does my son have to commit murder to get help?"

She added that her son had also sent a letter to his GP begging for help.
