How do I access my QNAP NAS using SSH?

1. Enable SSH on your NAS
You can enable SSH on your NAS using one of the following methods:
Using Qfinder Pro
- Download and install Qfinder Pro on your PC.
- Open Qfinder Pro.
Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network. - Locate your NAS on the list.
TipMake sure that your NAS is on the same network as your computer.
- Click on your NAS.
- Go to Settings > Connect via SSH.
The Login window appears. - Login in to your NAS with an administrator account. If the default administrator account "admin" is enabled, you can log in with this account. For details, see What is the default system administrator password for my NAS?
The Connect via SSH window appears. - Enable Allow SSH connections.
TipIf SSH is already enabled then Allow SSH Connections will already be enabled and the Apply button will be disabled. - Click Apply.
SSH is enabled on your NAS.
Using the QTS web interface (web browser)
- Login in to your NAS with an administrator account. If the default administrator account "admin" is enabled, you can log in with this account. For details, see What is the default system administrator password for my NAS?
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Network & File Services > Telnet/SSH.
- Enable Allow SSH connection.
- Click Apply.
SSH is enabled on your NAS.
2. Access your NAS with SSH
Access your NAS depending on your computer's operating system:
Access your NAS with SSH (Windows)
- Download and install PuTTy.
- Open PuTTy.
- Configure a SSH connection with the following PuTTy settings:
- Host Name (or IP address): Your NAS IP address
- Connection type: SSH
- Click Open.
- Click Yes on any confirmation windows that appear.
A login window appears. - Enter your NAS user credentials to log in to the NAS.
TipIf you do not have sufficient administrator permission, run the command "sudo -i" first before the above command. - Enter Q.
- Enter Y.
PuTTy establishes an SSH connection to your NAS.
Access your NAS with SSH (macOS)
- Open Finder.
- In the menu bar, go to Go > Utility.
- Open Terminal.
The macOS terminal window appears. - Enter the following command where "username" is your username and "YOUR_NAS_IP_ADDRESS" is your NAS IP address (for example: admin@10.32.72.68):
ssh username@YOUR_NAS_IP_ADDRESS
TipIf you do not have sufficient administrator permission, run the command "sudo -i" first before the above command. - If this is the first time you’ve accessed your NAS with SSH you will receive an authenticity warning. Enter yes.
- Enter your NAS account password.
The Console Management window appears. - Enter Q.
- Enter Y.
Terminal establishes an SSH connection to your NAS.
