    What is test-optional?
Test optional simply means ACT/SAT scores are not required for students applying for admission to Coe College. Coe’s test-optional policy gives select students* the option to decide if their standardized test scores (ACT/SAT) will be considered in the application review process.

    Who is eligible?
Only students applying as first-year applicants with a 3.0 GPA or higher may choose to exclude their test score from the application process. They will be considered for admission and a Trustee Scholarship valued up to $32,000 per year.

A standardized test score must be provided in order to be considered for full-tuition awards, the Trustee Scholarship valued up to $36,000 per year, or direct entry into the nursing program.

How will I indicate my test score submission preference?
When submitting the application for admission, candidates answer the following question to indicate their test score review preference:
Do you want your standardized test scores considered in the admission review process?*

    • Yes, I want my standardized test scores considered
    • No, I do not want my standardized test scores considered

Will I be at a disadvantage if I choose not to submit my test score?
In the admission review process, there will be no penalization or negative impact on applicants who choose not to submit a test score as part of the application. Students will be given equal consideration for admission and no assumptions will be made about the choice to withhold the test score.

Why would I submit a standardized test score if I don’t have to?
Some students feel that including their standardized test score helps give a complete picture of their academic accomplishments and ability.

Will I be considered for scholarships if I apply test-optional?
Yes, you will be automatically considered for a Trustee Scholarship valued up to $32,000 per year. You may also be considered for the Visual & Performing Arts Scholarship, Iowa Kohawk Award, National Kohawk Award and/or Impact Award. A standardized test score is not required to apply for the full-tuition Williston Jones Sustainability, Diversity Leadership or Marshall Music Scholarships. In order to be considered for the full-tuition Williston Jones Distinguished Trustee Scholarship or the Trustee Scholarship valued up to $36,000 per year, a standardized test score must be provided.
