The intimate chamber musical The Band’s Visit, which transferred to Broadway last fall following a sold-out world-premiere run at the Atlantic Theater Company Off-Broadway, was the biggest winner at the 72nd Annual Tony Awards, which were presented June 10 at Radio City Music Hall.

Tony voters responded to composer David Yazbek and playwright Itamar Moses’ adaptation of the 2007 film by Eran Kolirin about an Egyptian police band stranded in a remote village in the Israeli desert, awarding it ten Tony Awards in total, including Best Musical.

The Band’s Visit earned Tony Awards for Best Original Score, Best Book, Best Direction (David Cromer), Best Orchestrations (Jamshied Sharifi), Best Sound Design (Kai Harada), and Best Lighting Design (Tyler Micoleau).

Cast members Katrina Lenk, Tony Shalhoub, and Ari'el Stachel became first-time Tony Award winners for their performances as strangers whose lives are changed in subtle and profound ways over the course of one evening.

The London-born juggernaut Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a two-part theatrical event that opened at Broadway’s Lyric Theatre in April following a 2016 West End premiere, followed with six awards including Best Play.

The production also earned Best Direction for John Tiffany and swept in the creative awards category—winning Best Costume Design (Katrina Lindsay), Best Scenic Design (Christine Jones), Best Lighting Design (Neil Austin), and Best Sound Design (Gareth Fry).

The National Theatre’s acclaimed Broadway transfer of Angels in America, which was nominated for 11 Tonys (the most-nominated play in Broadway history) won the Tony for Best Revival of a Play, in addition to acting honors for Nathan Lane (Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play as Roy Cohn) and Andrew Garfield (Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play as Prior Walter).
