Harry Potter, the world's most famous wizard, may be returning in a new drama in the West End next year.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been written by author JK Rowling in collaboration with John Tiffany (who will direct) and playwright Jack Thorne, who also wrote the recent E4 teen drama Glue.

It will open at the Palace Theatre next summer, with tickets going on sale this autumn.

It was originally thought that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child would delve into what happened to Harry’s parents (Lily Evans Potter and James Potter) before they were killed by Lord Voldemort. But JK Rowling has since confirmed in a Twitter post that the work is definitely not a prequel to her seven Harry Potter novels.

She offered her followers no further clues about the content of the play, tweeting: "I don't want to say too much more, because I don't want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans".

Few additional details have been announced, though it is understood that informal casting has already started.

Tiffany's previous theatre credits include the Tony-award winning musical, Once; the play, Black Watch; and an adaptation of the Swedish horror film (and John Ajvide Lindqvist novel) Let The Right One In, on which he also collaborated with Thorne.

The official script book of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Parts I & II will be published on July 31, 2016. To order from the Telegraph for £20 with free P&P, call 0844 871 1515 or visit books.telegraph.co.uk
