About the Author

Dr. Jason Fung is a New York Times-bestselling author whose books include The Obesity Code, The Diabetes Code, The Obesity Code Cookbook, The PCOS Plan, Life in the Fasting Lane, and The Complete Guide to Fasting (co-authored with Jimmy Moore). Dr. Fung completed medical school at the University of Toronto and a fellowship in nephrology at the University of California. A dear friend recommended this book, citing that she hadn’t read it but everyone she knew who had said it was “earth shattering” and “completely revolutionized and debunked every diet myth”. I thought, impossible! So I bought it and read it and now am totally in agreeable! I even got buy-in from my family doctor to follow my weight loss as I tried intermittent fasting as a new way to shake things up. The surprising simplicity of “listening to your body” and only eat when your body actually needs to, is so counterintuitive to our society’s cultural norms of 3 meals a day and constant snacking. The basic premise of Dr. Fung’s years of research findings was so simple, our bodies are revolutionary geniuses. We have survived periods of long famine and short feast for centuries because our bodies are designed to store energy (aka body fat) to help us survive. So why not use this mechanism to lose fat? Try not eating voluntarily (aka fasting) Mind Blown!!! If you have excess weight, this method is genius and really not hard. The book explains why that is and how to get over pangs of hunger and cravings. Also not very hard. Spoiler alert, ignore them, distract yourself or have someWater or bone broth and you will survive!Goes well with the The Intermittent Fasting Guide.

This book is THE only book that you will ever need to understand why you are not getting any results on this diet, that diet and the whole cutting calories 'theory' ... Dr Jason Fung really breaks it all down in a language that you will all be able to understand. No waffly hard to grasp concepts. He has some great podcast appearances too ... a serious legend in the medical field, and responsible for turning so many peoples lives around and even saving people by improving their metabolic health !

I starve myself, lose some weight, then quit my diet because I'm starving & have no energy. This book points out that exact classic cycle, tells you with easy-to-understand facts that it's not your fault - because all the crap we hear about weight loss is wrong. Since I've been reading this I've been staying away from the scale (or as I call it: the shame scale) & so I don't know if I'm losing "weight" but I'm getting leaner & healthier! So I really do feel like it's working, but it is a lifestyle change for sure! It's much easier than I thought it would be though & I feel good, which is rare for most diets. I highly recommend this book! Should be required reading for anyone who works in health care.

In 7 days my blood pressure is 121/73 and have now dropped 2 meds at 65 yrs old. No more drowsiness and so much energy. All the fat is literally melting into the sunset. All from not knowing how it all worked and now following a easy method of weight loss. This book should be mandatory reading in grade 9. I started at p.155 section 5. What's wrong with our diet?

Such a well researched book on the causes of obesity. The studies mentioned are all reputable, over years and hundreds or thousands of subjects. None of these food studies done by manufacturers promoting so called health benefits while stuffing their products with sugar you don't know is there!
I am trying the intermittent fasting recommended and find it definitely worthwhile.
This is quite a long read but so worthwhile for anyone who yo yo diets, in fact for anyone struggling with their weight.
Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. Very informative and thought provoking. What disappointed me in the end was the suggested meal plans in the last chapter. Ugh. As soon as I saw them I was upset that I clearly just read another diet book. The "eat" days were super low carb items which couldn't have added up to much more than 1200 calories. Meanwhile, the book makes it clear several times over that cutting out or severely restricting any type of food is the reason mosy diets fail. Hence why I was surprised the non-fasting days were not almost completely open to all food (yes, even ice cream or pasta).
I give it a 5 star for information and the promotion of self-reflection, but I give it a 3 star for saving the truth till the end of the book. Basically, if you've done phase 2 of The South Beach Diet, you will be pretty much doing that if you follow this book. Fasting alone is not the secret to weight loss unless it's paired with....you guessed it! Healthy eating!
