What’s Inside?

Part one: Context

To lead well, we need to understand the landscape in which we find ourselves. There are developmental pathways that can help us navigate our way through the fog. Here we discover our overarching map of the territory.

Part two: The practice of perspective

Learn to see better to lead better. We need to expand how we look at issues as well as craft our ability to be discerning. Next we balance this with sensitive and sensible action.

When we change the way we look at things, things don’t change, WE do.

Part three: YOU

Leadership is deeply personal. How we show up matters. We can be deliberate and intentional about the narratives we choose to guide us. Here we will meet the five core leadership Archetypes to help you on your journey and the shadows we need to avoid.

Part four: THEM

Here we dive into the tough stuff: the Four Devils. These are the Fire Bug, the Storm Driver, the Water Bomber, and the Ground Splitter. We explore the challenging behaviours we see In the workplace, the hidden drivers causing them, and how to contend with them.

Part five: US

Here we make a pledge for being better, to creating a more wise and compassionate world. We gather our skirts around us and we make a declaration. This is how we make it through the fog of uncertainty and fulfil our mission for making a positive difference in the lives of others.

A clarion call: The world needs you

We are facing a crisis in trust in leadership. With successive Royal Commissions, our institutions and their leaders are failing us. Against this backdrop of suspicion, expectations of leaders have never been higher: be vulnerable, be transparent, be consultative, but make hard decisions, be accountable, and do the right thing.

Alongside this are the issues that drain us the most: the people stuff.

My core objective in writing this book was to equip leaders with the ability to see better so they can lead better.

When we can see patterns in behaviour, we can create solutions that last.

This book is about helping you to see with bionic x-ray eyes into the core drivers of people stuff issues.

Ultimately, with this book in your hot little hands, my wish is for you to become a more wise and compassionate leader. That’s what the world really needs.

It’s also what you really need to lead with more conviction and confidence, even in the face of overwhelming and challenging circumstances.

As Matt Church, Leadership Expert, Founder Thought Leaders says,

“Leadership is all about the people stuff. Not shareholder value, not strategy, not vision, but people. Human centred leadership is a competitive advantage.”

What they say about People Stuff

“Leadership has changed. It's a daily rollercoaster ride. When leading people, often the only thing we can control is ourselves ...the way we react and the way we respond. People Stuff is an insightful and practical guide for any leader. It's a must-read book to help you lead with wisdom when it comes to all that 'people stuff'.”

People stuff is at the heart of leadership. While on paper you might lead a team or a department or an organisation, at the most fundamental level you lead people. This book, People Stuff, is an advanced handbook for leaders who are willing to work on themselves first. People Stuff goes beyond leadership styles, tactics and tips, to the very core of how you see yourself, your people and your organisation. And when this perspective changes, everything follows. In this book Zoe will teach you how. This is most definitely not leadership for dummies. This is an advanced book about developing wisdom and mastery as a leader. Essential reading for any leader who wants to be the best version of themselves.
For the decade or so that I’ve known Zoë, she’s always been great at people stuff. This book will convince you of the same…This book shows how Zoë has a knack for turning complex information into practical stories that we can relate to and apply for ourselves to make us better leaders.
If understanding people in depth – from self to others, is a meta-skill for leaders in 2020 and beyond then People Stuff is a guiding light on becoming better at this for leaders at all stages.

Filled with wise insights, penetrating (and useful) questions, and a brilliant set of archetypes, People Stuff made me reconsider what leadership is, and how to do it well. I would highly recommend you partake of Zoe’s practical wisdom, as it will help you be a better version of the leader you are.
People Stuff is a great read. It is a practical and insightful guide for leaders who want to fine-tune their leadership when it comes to their people, while keeping it real.
People Stuff is insightful, practical and of enormous value in addressing the real issues that impact everyday business. What I loved about this book was that it helped me think more deeply about these everyday issues and then develop better approaches and solutions to these issues.

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands, but in seeing with new eyes.” -Marcel Proust. Just discovered my all-time favourite quote in Zoë Routh ‘s fantastic book on People Stuff and leadership. Zoë has written a whole part on “The practice of perspective”... something that all leaders need a lot of at the moment. A fresh perspective is vital

All of us have the potential for great good, great ethics and great contribution. The shadow side is the potential for the opposite. We can’t rid ourselves of shadow. We can suppress it and we can ignore it - but the worst part is when we fail to see it. This flaw is rife in leadership.’ - Zoë Routh. Loving Zoë Routh’s new book ‘People Stuff’! A technical, smooth flowing read that is now a heavily dog eared and highlighted book! Added feature - being able to highlight key takeaways without it bleeding overleaf.

Looking for the key to successfully navigating the “People Stuff” on your leadership journey? Then get your hands on a copy of this “Advanced Handbook for Leadership” from the always inspiring Zoë Routh. As soon as I picked the book up and started reading I was hit with my very first insight, “perspective”. People won’t always see things the way you do. Try and see what you are saying from their perspective. It will open your eyes

Your fabulous perspective about changing how we see people and their actions is compelling and of significant importance in the framework of working with our greatest basic strengths, ideals, values and character.
