Ubuntu server project released

The Ubuntu foundation has announced the first release of the Ubuntu Server …

The Ubuntu foundation announced yesterday the first official release of the Ubuntu Server distribution. Available for AMD64, i386, and PowerPC architectures, Ubuntu Server 5.10 provides a complete Ubuntu-based server installation ready for production environments. Developed and maintained by the Ubuntu Server Team, the new server distribution will bring the power and flexibility of the Ubuntu Linux distribution to data centers and web servers:

The Ubuntu Server Team is established to pursue short term, high impact goals for the Ubuntu 6.04 release, such as server hardware testing and kernel quality assurance. Plans are laid for future developments in "Just Works" server setup and operation. Join the Ubuntu Server Team today, and bring the spirit of Ubuntu to the server world: HEAVY METAL FOR HUMAN BEINGS!

Ubuntu happens to be the distribution of choice in the Strategic Penguin Command Center of the Ars Orbiting HQ, so many of us are eager to try out the new server release. For a glimpse at the robust feature set, take a look at the ServerCandy specification at the Ubuntu Wiki. The server team has some interesting plans for the future, including potential inclusion of the Xen virtualization system.

Ubuntu has become the single most popular Linux desktop distribution in active use, consistently topping the charts at DistroWatch. At the 2005 Linux New Media Awards, Ubuntu won the Best Debian Derivative award with an extrodinary total of 43 percent of the votes in that category, and Ubuntu luminary Mark Shuttleworth won the Oustanding Contribution to Open Source award. Interest in Ubuntu within the Linux server market has steadily increased lately with the announcement of Ubuntu's successful DB2 certification, and the release of the DCC Alliance LSB-compliant standard core for Debian distributions.

In other Ubuntu news, developers have announced the availability of Flight CD 2, the second pre-release of Dapper Drake, the next version of the Ubuntu Linux distribution. The Flight CD 2 release has several new and exciting features, including the freshly released GNOME 2.13.3 with the Cairo enhanced Clearlooks theme and Nautilus Beagle integration, OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 RC 2, the 2.6.15 Linux kernel, and Firefox 1.5. This is definitely a good day to be an Ubuntu user.
