SEOUL -- Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung asked President Yoon Suk Yeol on Monday to agree to his election pledge to give 250,000 won (US$182) in cash handouts to the entire population and accept a special probe into suspicions surrounding a Marine's death.

Lee made the demands during his first-ever meeting with Yoon at the presidential office.

■ PPP nominates retired ex-lawmaker to head emergency committee

SEOUL -- The ruling People Power Party (PPP) on Monday named a retired former lawmaker to head an emergency leadership committee tasked with organizing a national convention to elect a new party leader following a crushing defeat in recent parliamentary elections.

Rep. Yun Jae-ok, the PPP's floor leader and the party's acting chairman, announced the decision to designate Hwang Woo-yea, a former five-term lawmaker now serving as standing advisor to the party, to lead the emergency committee.

■ Gov't to deploy more medical staff as senior doctors at 5 major hospitals take weekly breaks

SEOUL -- Health Minister Cho Kyoo-hong said Monday that the government plans to deploy more medical staff as senior doctors at five major hospitals in Seoul decided to take a weekly day off starting this week.

Cho also renewed a pledge to accomplish medical reform, although a mass walkout by trainee doctors has crippled public health services at major hospitals for more than two months.

■ S. Korean ministers, Australian PM agree to enhance security, defense industry cooperation

SEOUL -- South Korean foreign and defense ministers met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra on Monday to discuss ways to expand cooperation in regional security and the defense industry.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul and Defense Minister Shin Won-sik held a meeting with Albanese and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong to exchange opinions on Indo-Pacific strategic cooperation, the military and defense industry, and North Korean issues, their ministries said.

■ Police to probe stalking allegation involving first lady, pastor

SEOUL -- Police have found the need to investigate an alleged stalking charge against a Korean American pastor who secretly filmed himself handing over a luxury Dior handbag to first lady Kim Keon Hee during their meeting in Seoul in September 2022, a top police official said Monday.

Woo Jong-soo, chief of the National Office of Investigation (NOI), said that police investigators are now in the stage of analyzing details of the controversial video filmed by Rev. Choi Jae-young, including its upload frequency.
