Congratulations to Hearst Newspapers and all the Hearst brands that won National Headliner Awards!

View profile for Wendy Metcalfe, graphic

Senior Vice President of Content, Editor-in-Chief, Hearst Connecticut Media Group

Very rewarding to see local news organizations recognized for their steadfast work – in national press awards. Hearst CT just received first place in the National Headliner Awards for its investigative work into the state police ticket scandal, you can read about here: https://lnkd.in/e-BssU5C   Bill Cummings, Joshua Eaton, Jacqueline Rabe Thomas and Taylor Johnston won the news series category (for media markets below the top 20 in size nationally). Big shoutout to Matt Rocheleau, who leads our I-team and data reporting, and our extended newsroom staff who make this work possible and also deliver high-quality, public-service news for our readers day in and out.   The judges’ comments heralding the journalism say it all: “The results of this series speak for themselves. The resignations of the state’s two top public safety officials, a federal criminal grand jury probe led by the U.S. Dept. of Justice. And at the heart of it, trusted state troopers falsifying tickets to make themselves look better — worsened by the fact that it all skews racial profiling data. This series exposes everyday corruption, and restores our faith. Well done.” You can read more about the investigation here: https://lnkd.in/eUyyYkjx Today's recognition follows Hearst CT also being a finalist, for an FOI investigation, in IRE’s international journalism competition: "Transparency Failures Sow Distrust in City Marred by Corruption," by Jacqueline Rabe Thomas, Joshua Eaton and Brian Lockhart was announced here: https://lnkd.in/eCQvsr_q It's not about the awards. It's about the service this journalism does on behalf of our community. However, pausing and reflecting on the caliber of this important work, and celebrating the journalists who consistently deliver for their readers, is beyond welcome.
