K-Stew is undeniably the queen of the modern-day hair flip. Most of the time it looks like she wakes up, tosses her hair sideways, and walks out the door. What gives away the fact that she doesn't just roll out of bed looking like this is the volume concentrated at the very top of her head. It keeps the style from moving into a comb-over territory, but also makes it look deliberate. To try this look at home, spritz a bit of volumizing spray at the roots before you blow-dry. As you dry your roots, lift the hair at your crown up with your fingers to give it some height, then blow-dry it in the flipped position to help it stay in place. Finish with a very light mist of a light-hold hair spray to avoid the dreaded crunch (we suggest Shu Uemura Art of Hair Sheer Lacquer Micro-Fine Finishing Spray).

Sure, the flip works really well when it's a bit roughed up, but it also looks gorgeous when hair is polished—like it was at Diane von Furstenberg. While each model had a slightly different style (von Furstenberg wanted the girls to keep their natural texture), some had their hair blown out so it was shiny and voluminous. "They look like Breck girls," said hairstylist Orlando Pita. He left their natural parts, which for some meant the hair fell all the way to the side, resulting in a bouncy version of the flip that had us swooning.

Adding volume at the crown is an instant way to add sex appeal to the flip (and also helps it stay in place). At Lanvin, hairstylist Guido made a deep side part and prepped the roots with Redken Quick Tease 15 Backcombing Finishing Spray, a product specifically made to use before backcombing hair. (Warning: Use it sparingly or you'll end up getting your brush stuck in it.) He grabbed the hair at the top of the head, teased it while holding it straight up in the air, and then let the section fall over to one side. He smoothed down the surface with his bristle brush and allowed a few pieces to fall surreptitiously into the models' eyes. "The front of the hair is a bit '80s," he said, which was OK since the rest of the hair, which was product free, was not.

It's no surprise that a Victoria's Secret model would wear a version of the flip that was sexy, shiny, and full of body. She was on the red carpet at this event, but we can picture her gracing the pages of the famous lingerie catalog with this hairstyle. To get her soft waves, still curl your hair as you normally would—in one-inch sections, wrapping your hair away from your face. Then brush out the curls and flip.

For this flipped look, hairstylist Paul Hanlon went to town, teasing and emptying cans of hair spray into the models' hair. Not exactly something we'd want to do before a night out. The takeaway from this example is that the flip isn't just limited to straight textures.

The flip works on hair of just about any length. At Giles, many of the models had hair that fell way past their shoulders, but the thing to remember is that the longer it is, the heavier it is, and it will weigh down the root area if you're not careful. While the '80s flip was too voluminous, the opposite looks just as bad, so be wary when styling your hair. Start by spraying damp hair with a root lifter like Phyto Phytovolume Actif Volumizer Spray, then blow-dry. Spray in a volumizing product meant for dry hair, like Sally Hershberger Major Body Volumizing Style Boost, on both sides of your part. It plumps up your hair, and—no joke—you can actually feel the difference in thickness.

Beyoncé is our curly-hair crush (actually, she's just our girl crush in general), and she makes a great case for trying the flip with springy ringlets. To keep the style in place, prep your curls as you normally would, just make a deep side part and toss all your hair over to one side. If you blow-dry with a diffuser attachment, aim it at your part, letting the air flow in the direction you want the flip to lie across your head. If you prefer to nix the tools, set the flip in place by sliding bobby pins into the front pieces, removing them when your hair is fully dry.

The flip also looks great on short lengths, as Diaz demonstrates. But the rules are reversed: The shorter your hair, the less volume you'll want at the crown (or it will look more like Diaz's infamous style in There's Something About Mary). Also, the shorter the layers around your face are, the less deep you'll want to make your part.
