Red carpet hair and real life hair don't often intersect, but Hailey Baldwin's go-to look–the super high ponytail–works both ways. Not only does the pony transition from day to night, it's totally DIY-able. Here, hair pro Florido Basallo breaks down the anatomy of a perfect ponytail. Pro tip: It's all about placement.

Step 1: Line it up
To figure out where your ponytail is going to go, "align it with where your cheekbones are–on a diagonal–and pull it back to that point," Basallo says. "And then, take hairspray and a bristle brush, and kind of just like smooth all around it."
Step 2: Smooth it
Basallo sleeks hair back with a brush, "so that when it's in the ponytail, you don't have any kinks."
Step 3: Tie it up
Major key: For a high, swingy pony, Basallo secures hair with two elastics.
Step 4: Braid and wrap
Next, Basallo hides the hair elastics with a skinny braid. "Take a small section from underneath the ponytail, braid it, and then just wrap it around the ponytail, and secure it with a couple of pins."
Step 5: Add volume
"I took sections from the ponytail, starting from the middle and made my way to the front, teasing a little bit at the root, and then hairsprayed it," he says, before working texture spray through the lengths of the pony.
Step 6: Lock it down
"Sometimes I spray hairspray on my hand and then I hairspray my Mason Pearson, and slick it into wherever I want to," Basallo says. "At the end, I smooth out the little babies and flyaways."
