While many of us have at least one pair of go-to jeans, fashion enthusiasts like to use the age-old phrase “you can never have too many” — especially when it comes to denim. With the current trend cycle, there are also a multitude of silhouettes to keep in rotation, depending on your taste and desired aesthetic. From high-waisted and baggy to the low-slung cigarette that debuted at the Fall/Winter 2024 Miu Miu show, the options feel endless.

That’s why we tapped 81 honest and highly detailed InStyle editors and fit testers to review the most-talked-about jeans on the market. These women all have different body types and called in disparate sizes in the same pair of jeans, which helps us to better analyze their feedback. After combing through their detailed reviews, we zeroed in on the key features to call out about the pants on this list, so you know exactly what to expect when you place your order.

We also talked to model Ali Tate Cutler, celebrity stylist Tracy Shapoff, blogger Marina Torres, and digital style creator Elaine Davis, about what they look for in denim. As experts in their fields, they’ve all tried many, many pairs. Shapoff put it best when she described the denim brands she relies on: “Longevity, quality, understanding of the body as well as keeping up with trends and style.” Luckily, all of the jeans on this list follow suit.

What We Love: The quality and durability of these jeans.

What We Don’t Love: The jeans may run a bit short, and they don’t have as much give as a pair of stretch jeans would.

These mid-rise jeans are extremely high-quality for the price, making them the best overall pick in the bunch. A tester who is 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a curvy/hourglass figure wore them in a size 27 (though she usually wears a 25/26), and found them best styled casually with white sneakers. Washing the jeans twice throughout the testing period, she noted that the material is thick, and not as stretchy as her other pairs. “This is one of my favorite pairs of jeans, due to sturdiness and nice fit,” she says. They're great for those looking for a classic, structured pair of jeans, where the material becomes a bit softer after washing but the shape is maintained.

Size: 25–32 | Material: Cotton, elastane | Cut: Straight-leg, high-rise

What We Love: These jeans do hold their shape with wear and look just as good as pants that cost double the price. Affordability is key.

What We Don’t Love: The more you wash these jeans, the less structured they become (though skipping the dryer helps). The front pockets are not as deep as some would like, and the back pockets are a bit small from a visual perspective.

As a brand, Old Navy has a wide variety of styles and cuts and sizing is always consistent. For everyday jeans get the job done, available in a beautiful vintage black that dials up the sophistication. A fit tester who is 5 feet, 5 inches tall with an hourglass shape wore them in a size 14. After giving them a whirl, she compared the silhouette to her Madewell jeans but felt that the material is not as high-quality. “I would recommend them if your budget is strained,” she says, adding, “I think they are a great jean, not necessarily the highest quality, but they will last you a few years.”

Size: 00–30 in Regular or Tall | Material: Cotton, lyocell, recycled cotton | Cut: Extra high-waist, wide-leg

What We Love: The jeans are constructed extremely well and hold their shape, even after washing.

What We Don’t Love: They may be best for those with narrow hips, as they have a slim fit.

Not only are these jeans versatile but they’re also in line with current trends and are perfect for a shoe moment coming to ankle-length. A 5-foot, 6-inch tall fit tester with an inverted triangle shape (broad in the shoulders and narrow in the hips) chose a size 27, which is standard for her, and they fit nicely. Styled with everything from sneakers to Dr. Martens, she says that the denim is soft, but still holds its shape. “The soft material adds to the comfort. It’s a happy medium between lightweight and thick," she explains, not overly flexible where bagging or slouching can occur after a few hours.

A second tester of similar height with a curvy shape (a small waist and wide hips) sized up in this pair so that the jeans would better accommodate her figure. "While the fit may have been a little off for my comfort on my legs, I think they looked good on," she says, also noting the perfect length for her frame.

Size: 22–33 | Material: Cotton, elastane | Cut: Straight-leg, high-rise

What We Love: They're the perfect combination of wide-leg and baggy.

What We Don’t Love: In terms of details, the pockets at the front could be deeper, and the crotch seam is fairly large, which can feel rough if you have sensitive skin.

These jeans are a great hybrid style, ideal for those looking to amass a variety of roomy jeans. Design-wise, we love that the cuffed hem can be unrolled or adjusted to the wearer's liking and that they come in a fairly wide range of sizes.

It's worth keeping in mind, however, that these pants seem to run large, according to two testers. While the site lists these jeans as true to size, one expressed how large they felt on her curvy, 5-foot, 5-inch tall frame, despite sampling her regular size (27). Her makeshift fix was to put the top button through the first belt loop to make the waist smaller, which is a trending style hack. Still, she grew to love the baggy quality and considers the quality of the denim to be flattering. “I love that they have a V-shaped seam about the back pockets — it’s my favorite thing to look for in jeans,” she says. “The shape is everything! I always look for [unique jeans], and I love that these are different but easy to style.”

Size: 22–34 | Material: Organic cotton | Cut: Baggy, wide-leg

What We Love: The jeans are offered in many washes and types of distressing, and the material feels high-quality and sturdy. They also retain their shape after wear.

What We Don’t Love: They’re described on the site as “Italian fabric,” which can be a bit misleading as they are made of organic cotton and recycled elastane, which is relatively common.

These “power stretch” skinny jeans don't disappoint, two testers say. One who is 5 feet, 5 inches tall with an hourglass figure, broad shoulders, and wide postpartum hips ordered them in her usual size 28, though she also commonly wears a 29. After choosing a dark wash with a fringed hem and distressing, she found that the rips tore a bit more and felt more lived-in after wear. “If I had a capsule wardrobe for each season, I could see this piece incorporated into use for the spring, winter, and fall,” she says. “The millennial in me won’t let the skinny jeans trend die off, so I’m wearing it forever and this fits right in.”

Size: 23–34 | Material: Organic cotton, recycled elastane | Cut: High-waist, skinny-leg

What We Love: The jeans are high-quality and maintain their structure, without ripping or fraying after wash.

What We Don’t Love: For customers who prefer a bit more give, these jeans err on the stiff side.

These jeans are for those who prefer structure above all else. A fit tester who is 5 feet, 4 inches tall with an hourglass shape ordered her typical size of 28/29 after going through the “What Size Am I?” quiz function on Aritzia’s site and suggested sizing up. She was most impressed by the material, which she describes as thick, but not necessarily heavy. “Coming from someone who used to wear Hollister jeggings in middle and high school, these are a major upgrade,” she says.

A second fit tester, who is petite and wore a size 30, found them comfortable and flattering — a great choice for walking around the city or wearing to work, especially since the length seemed to work for her.

Size: 23–32 | Material: Organic cotton | Cut: High-rise, wide-leg

What We Love: These jeans come in a super-stretchy material that a fit tester described as even more movable than regular denim. They’re great for someone who moves around a lot, and even after washing, they retain their shape.

What We Don’t Love: The distressed edges do begin to fray after washing. They’re also a bit thin, making them more of a spring or summer jean. For the high price, that’s something to consider.

These dark wash jeans have an undeniable ‘70s vibe, and they look and feel high-quality. Our fit tester who is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and curvy sized up in a 27 and was glad that she did. “When I first felt the material,” she says, “they reminded me of cheap Hollister jeans from the ‘00s. But after wearing them I began to really love the material.” She also compared them to her Levi’s, which are too stiff and not as flattering as this lighter, smoother feel.

A second tester loved these jeans on her petite and curvy frame, too. "I was worried because I'm short and curvy that they would swallow me, but they actually are quite flattering. They don't look too baggy or oversized and they look nice in the waist and hips," she says.

What We Love: They hold their shape, and they don’t fray with washing.

What We Don’t Love: There are no petite or short options, and with a 31-inch inseam, they can run long on those who are under 5 feet, 4 inches tall.

Two fit testers weighed in on these high-quality, non-stretch jeans. One is 5 feet, 2 inches tall with an inverted triangle, athletic build — she wore them in a 25. Because there isn't a short inseam option, she cuffed the jeans to wear with short-heeled boots, and loved them for elevating her overall style, noting, “The jeans are super baggy but in a very chic and edgy way…I’ve never really liked carrot-shaped jeans and never in a million years thought that they would look good on me, but these are so, so cool!” Another option to tailor the length to a short frame? Tugging on the hidden drawstrings at the bottom of each pant leg.

Standing 5 feet, 6 inches tall with an athletic build, a second tester chose size 29 and also loved the shape of the jeans on her frame. “These jeans fit my body like the glass slipper fits Cinderella’s foot,” she says.

Everlane The Way-High Sailor Jean

Everlane

What We Love: There are two inseam options on these jeans.

What We Don’t Love: One tester noted how high-waisted they are, so these pants may not be ideal for those who prefer a mid-rise waist.

Everlane’s Way-High Sailor jeans are comfortable and movable, but hold the weight and stiffness of high-quality denim. Offered in five washes and two inseam options (27.5 and 29.5 inches), they are made with regenerative cotton, which is less harmful to the environment but still sturdy enough not to fray after going through the wash.

A fit tester who is 5 feet, 6 inches tall with wide shoulders and broad hips wore size 27. “I love the fit and comfort of these jeans,” she says. “They are slimming and comfortable while still looking nice and refined. [The fit and wash are] very sophisticated, so it can be easily dressed up with heels or dressed down with sneakers," also noting that the pockets are deep, but slim so they lay flat and don’t add bulk.

Size: 23–33 | Material: Regenerative cotton, elastane | Cut: High-rise wide-leg crop

What We Love: Because they offer a looser fit and two large knee holes, they offer great range and freedom of movement.

What We Don’t Love: The jeans are listed as low-rise, but two fit testers with different body types found them to be more mid-rise.

Two testers embraced the grunge look in these GRLFRND Bella jeans. They’re sturdy, yet soft to the touch, and because they're a looser fit, they offer great range and freedom of movement. They also hold their shape and structure throughout time and wash cycles, with no fraying, ripping, or signs of wear and tear.

The first tester, who is 5 feet, 8 inches tall and a size 24, ended up getting these jeans taken in at the waist for a more flattering and comfortable fit. Meanwhile, the 5-foot, 2-inch tall tester who wears a size 28/29 will likely get them hemmed to be a bit shorter and deemed them a great in-between "for a millennial who wants to be more Gen-Z but can’t commit to being fully on the low-rise train,” she summarizes.

Size: 23–32 | Material: Cotton | Cut: Slouchy, lower-rise

What We Love: They don’t stretch out during wear, and retain their color, texture, and fit, even after wash.

What We Don’t Love: According to the fit tester, the jeans didn’t feel like a true low-rise, falling about 1.5 inches below the belly button.

These heavyweight, structured jeans have very minimal stretch, which is great for those who love a rigid look. They also come in an extremely dark wash, if you’re looking to add a bit more sophistication to your wardrobe by way of a dark palette.

According to the fit tester, the jeans weren't super low-rise, falling about 1.5 inches below the belly button. The leg also felt wide, not like a true straight-leg style, a detail shoppers can consider if they have a strong preference.

Size: 23–34 | Material: Cotton | Cut: Low-rise, straight leg

What We Love: They're super comfortable, with a stretchy fabric that holds you in place, but also expands with you.

What We Don’t Love: These jeans are not for those who dread the loosened-up look throughout the day. A fit tester who reported the jeans were too big on her says they became even baggier after a few hours.

Both fit testers who spent time in these jeans (one is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and a size 28, and the other is 5 feet, 4 inches tall with an inverted triangle shape who tried size 32) reported maximum stretch in the material, which required washing after every couple of wears to try to “tighten up” the fabric to its original form. The first tester enjoyed the stretch and described it as forgiving and flattering for different figures.

“I would recommend these jeans for their quality and look, but I would caution [shoppers] to be sure to try them on before purchasing as it could be difficult to predict fit based on waist size alone," the second tester says. "These jeans, even though baggy already, did become even baggier while I was wearing them after only a few hours. If I were planning to buy these jeans, I would consider sizing down a size."

Size: 24–35/36 in Regular or Petite | Material: Cotton, polyester, and elastane | Cut: High-rise flare

What We Love: They’re good quality at a more affordable price point than other brands, comparatively speaking. They don’t distress or change shape after multiple wears.

What We Don’t Love: For those who don’t love thick, non-stretch denim that veers on the heavier side, these may be a skip.

These non-stretch jeans from Madewell are right on trend and allow for a shoe moment at an ankle-grazing height. A 5-foot, 3-inch tall fit tester with a curvy shape wore them in a size 28 and appreciated how warm they kept her while ice skating. She compared them to her favorite jeans from Agolde, clarifying that these are thicker and more rigid but also feel like better quality than what she owns from Zara.

And while a plus-size fit tester who wore an 18W was apprehensive about the high rise on her short waist, she actually loved them. The pants hit her near the belly button, and despite the lack of stretch, kept her pretty comfortable for a full day at the office.

Size: 23–33 in petite, plus, standard, tall, or taller | Material: Cotton, elastane | Cut: High-waist straight-leg

What We Love: These jeans are stretchy and comfortable enough to wear every day. They keep their shape throughout the day and do not fade or shrink in the wash.

What We Don’t Love: The range of washes is not entirely ideal, as they don’t come in dark denim or black.

If you’re not about stiff denim and love a flare that allows for a shoe moment, these jeans are likely perfect for you. Our 5-foot, 2-inch tall fit tester with an hourglass shape is a size 26 and usually has trouble finding flattering jeans that accommodate her wider hips. However, she called these the Goldilocks of jeans: not too thick, not too thin — just right. “I have gotten so many compliments on my shape in these jeans and my best friends all agreed that they make my butt look crazy good,” she says. “I look for reasons to wear them and have even debated wearing them while working from home, which is saying something.”

Best Flare, Runner-Up

What We Love: This denim is ultra-soft and movable (even after washing and drying), which helps with the fit. They retain their shape throughout the day and do not shrink or fade after going through a cycle.

What We Don’t Love: The raw edges at the hem of the jeans may need trimming after a wash cycle.

These jeans come in four washes and are listed as a bestselling resort jean. And given the thin material, we agree that the style is best suited for summer months.

Even in terms of fit, the shorter inseam is meant for sandal-friendly wear, although a 5-foot, 7-inch tall fit tester who is curvy and wore a size 30 says the short height made her feel a bit self-conscious. “I think because this jean has a raw hem, they could have left them longer and had the wearer cut them to the correct length,” she suggests. However, a second petite tester found them to be the perfect length, even without a heel, for her 5-foot, 3-inch frame.

Size: 23–34 | Material: Organic cotton, cotton, recycled polyester, elastane | Cut: High-rise flare

What We Love: The material feels luxe and does not rip or fray, even after washing.

What We Don’t Love: The pockets are tiny, and their placement is such that they may not make for the most flattering angles.

These jeans, which have a stretch waist and hug the thighs, then flare out a touch at the ankles, are made for women seeking comfort and stretch. A fit tester at 5 feet, 9 inches with an hourglass shape wore them in a size 8 Tall and found that they gave off “mom jean vibes" without the typical rigidity. "I think there are chicer jeans out there, but if you are looking for comfy jeans to work from home in, these are just fine," she says.

Another petite and plus-sized fit tester (who is 5 feet, 3 inches and wore a 14 Petite) loved the way the jeans "contoured" her body, likely thanks to the high stretch content.

Size: 00–18 in Regular, Tall, Petite, or Plus | Material: Cotton, elastomultiester, Lycra elastane | Cut: Straight-leg

What We Love: The jeans hold up well after washing and drying in the machine, with no fraying, shrinking, or transferring of dye.

What We Don’t Love: The price point on these jeans may be high for some, especially as the fabric veers on the fragile territory. The denim material is very thin, with our fit tester reporting that her cat’s claw created a noticeable snag.

Available in six washes, The Cindy is Paige’s bestselling straight-leg fit. A 5-foot, 5-inch tall fit tester with a curvy shape wore a size 32 in the style after sizing up, so they may run a bit small. She also reported that they’re skintight, but certainly maintain top-of-the-line details such as a frayed hem and lived-in wash. Overall, she rated them very well: “I like the way they fit me — they feel tailored, but also laid-back and cool," she says.

On petite frames, the style proved equally lovable, with a second tester having worn them with everything from oversized button-downs and T-shirts to chunky sweaters. (The shoe picks varied just as much.) "I’m not usually one to buy straight-leg jeans, typically opting for a skinny silhouette instead, and this pair completely converted me," she says.

Size: 23–34 | Material: Cotton, polyester, spandex | Cut: High-rise ankle straight

What We Love: The jeans are great if you’re looking for a cropped fit, and while the material isn’t too thick or rigid, they also hold their shape, even after washing.

What We Don’t Love: The jeans do become less soft after washing them, according to a fit tester.

Pistola’s Lennon is equipped with a shark bite hem and light distressing throughout. A 5-foot, 1-inch tall fit tester with a curvy pear shape was in between a size 30 and 31 but tested the 30 for wear. She felt the jeans did not come to the proper length and were a bit long, thereby making her appear shorter and wider. “The wash is too light in my opinion, and certainly for someone my height it ends up being a very awkward length that requires alterations to become ‘cropped’ as it appears on the model.” While her rating wasn't stellar overall, a second tester who is the same height and a size 28 with a pear-shaped figure found them much more appealing — so you could chalk it up to preference.

And for those who aren't petite, the above-ankle length allows for a great shoe moment.

Size: 24–33 | Material: Cotton, polyester, elasterell | Cut: High-rise cropped bootcut

What We Love: They feel even softer after washing, and you can throw them into the dryer if you want a snugger fit after a few wears.

What We Don’t Love: The pockets are also shallow and cannot fit a larger smartphone. At the same time, even though they’re rib cage, they don’t “snatch” as well as our tester had hoped.

Shoppable on Amazon, these jeans are great in a pinch, when you're looking for something super-comfortable and thick enough to keep you warm in low temperatures. Testers found the quality and construction to be great, with no fraying or damage after wash and wear.

A fit tester who is 5 feet, 7 inches tall with a curvy hourglass figure wore a size 31, but ultimately regretted not sizing down. Comparing them to the Levi’s Ribcage jeans, she confirmed that this rise feels much higher. “I would recommend these jeans to someone looking for a very high rise, with a decent amount of stretch,” she wrote. “However, I wouldn’t recommend these jeans for someone who is below 5 feet, 5 inches, or has a short torso.” These jeans do stretch and loosen throughout the day, too, so if you don’t love the overly baggy look, you should skip them.

Size: 24–31 | Material: Organic cotton, spandex | Cut: High-rise, straight-leg

What We Love: The thick material helps the jeans hold their shape after wear. They have a slight stretch to them, which makes them decidedly more comfortable to wear for long periods. They also do not shrink or transfer in the wash.

What We Don’t Love: These jeans are only offered in a regular length and also run a bit small, particularly at the waist.

These vintage stretch jeans are mid-rise and are made to complement a structured fit. While our fit tester felt they were a bit long in the leg (she’s 5 feet, 2 inches tall with a curvy pear shape, and wore a size 32), the slight stretch in the denim helps them cater to a better all-around fit. “I loved how comfortable they were in my legs and how soft they were when they first arrived,” with the caveat that she wouldn't recommend them to someone over the largest size, as they run a little small.

Size: 23–32 | Material: Cotton, elastane | Cut: Mid-rise, straight-leg

What We Love: The style comes in many sizes and three lengths.

What We Don’t Love: There are no functional front pockets due to the compression. The back of the pants is lower than the front, so if you’re wearing high-waisted underwear, they will likely show.

These flare jeans from Spanx are for anyone seeking compression without the “jegging” look. Our fit tester who is 5 feet, 4 inches tall with an hourglass shape wore a size L Petite, which is her normal size. “Since I’m used to compression, I appreciated the ‘hug’ these pants gave me. These were comfortable enough to wear [regularly]," she says. "My only critique would be that I wished they were about 1 inch higher, when I sat down the top would roll, so I believe if they were just a smidge higher that wouldn’t have happened.”

A plus-sized tester of the same height (who took a size 2X Petite) agreed, noting that the standard length was about 4 inches too long, and the petite length was also at least 2 inches too long for her liking.

What to Keep in Mind

Sizing

Usually, if a denim brand offers a wide range of sizes, with an abundance of availability on the product page, you can trust that there’s a pair there for you. The trick is settling on the right number. We don’t always recommend taking your typical size, as you should always read the fine print in the product description, as well as reviews if they’re available. Usually, the brand will confirm whether the pants run true to size, but shoppers will ultimately close the case, as they deliver highly detailed commentary about everything from cut to inseam — often even with mirror pictures. If you want to ensure you’re purchasing jeans online in your size, choose a pair with all of these fixings on the product page and lots of feedback.

“It’s important for me to have a wide size range that caters to a variety of body types,” blogger Torres notes. If a product she lands upon doesn’t showcase that diversity right off the bat, she’ll likely skip it.

Brands

“A good jean brand not only creates a variety of jean styles in various silhouettes and lengths but consistently uses quality denim,” says Davis, who has donned jeans from Levi's and Banana Republic on her Instagram account. Of course, there may be denim brands on this list you’ve heard mentioned often, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re perfect for you based on popularity alone. Most of us seek denim brands that are touted for material longevity — which means the jeans get lots of wear through the years without fraying or stretching out of shape. A trusted denim brand should also offer more than one silhouette.

As a model who’s been in the fashion industry for a long time, Cutler has tried many brands. “I don’t need my denim to be over the top or crazy, I just want a few different options of rigid denim, slightly stretchy, high-waisted, and boyfriend. If you can do all of the basics well with high-quality cotton, I’m a fan for life,” she says. In that regard, it’s important to note that if a brand’s going “viral” for a specific cut, but doesn’t have an accompanying, versatile denim stock to complement it, it’s probably not a label renowned for jeans.

Quality

When it comes to quality denim, brands should be upfront about the materials used in production and they should also be candid about the source. “It’s important for me that good jeans brands care about the quality and the materials they use for their denim. It’s also important that the jeans I buy will last me for years and years, if not for a lifetime!” Torres says. “Good jeans also have to maintain their shape after wear.” While preferences for stretch may vary, if you notice that the denim you’re wearing feels flimsy, snags easily, or loses its elasticity, it’s not of superior quality.

Your Questions, Answered

What are the best jeans for a pear-shaped woman?

Shapoff says a boot-cut or wide-leg is most flattering on a pear shape, but she recommends a loose leg overall. “Pear-shaped women can totally rock a baggy, slouchy, low-waisted [pair of jeans] if they fancy a more edgy look,” Tate Cutler adds, confirming that the most classic in her book is a high-waisted bootcut or a mom jean. Meanwhile, if you’re pear-shaped and devoted to skinny jeans, Davis, who has “somewhat of a pear shape,” suggests ensuring that the denim is “curvy” cut before purchasing.

What are the best jeans for short-waisted women?

Both stylist Shapoff and model Tate Cutler agree that short-waisted women should avoid high-waisted denim. Tate Cutler suggests boyfriend jeans, as they keep the length in the legs, and Shapoff suggests a mid-rise. As for the shape of the pant leg, Davis is a fan of bootcuts or flares. “They elongate the leg, creating a nice balance,” she says.
