Career at apogee: NASA has named Carolyn Huntoon director of the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Huntoon, who began her career with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1970 and served most recently as director of Space and Life Sciences at the center, is the first female director of the command center of the U.S. space program. “Huntoon is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in how the human body adapts to space flight and an accomplished manager,” says NASA spokesman Brian Welsh. “Women are coming into roles at NASA that in the Apollo years would have been unheard of for women. We are moving to the point where it no longer will be news that women are in these kinds of positions.”
