Cole Carman, 18, decided to harvest his eggs prior to his transition so he could one day have children, Yahoo Parenting reports.

Dr. Aimee Eyvazzadeh, who successfully harvested Carman's eggs, said that egg harvesting is usually done when trans males in their 30s have already transitioned and stopped taking testosterone, but Eyvazzadeh says that's much more difficult because "[a]fter years of testosterone therapy, their ovaries would shut down and would not reawaken to create any viable eggs, or the eggs would be low quality."

Carman's parents, who adopted Cole after they'd been unable to conceive themselves, paid the $13,000 to fund their son's procedure. His parents say their son has always been very mature and having children was always very important to him. Eyvazzadeh agreed, saying, "The decision to do egg retrieval shows how forward-thinking and mature Cole is, because it's not something you do on a whim."

Cole is going to college in the fall and says he doesn't plan to have kids for another eight to 10 years, but it's nice to know he'll have the option.
