Spoon theory springs to mind
Only one of these pints of Guinness is acceptable.
I left school with very poor qualifications and found myself, at 16, working in an upholstery factory in the very hot June of 1987. The work was tough manual labour and the staff were tough and hard working. After my first week I went home in tears... I had been pushing foam seat cushions into their covers and the zips had shredded the skin on my arms. My dad and I had a very distant relationship, but he sat me down and I thought, here we go... It's the pull yourself up by your bootstraps and welcome to the working world speech....To my surprise he said "Sunshine, working is much harder than school. What you have to do is go in and do your best each day, and no-one can ask more than that. Your best will be different every day, but that's okay, if you know you did your best. You can always come home with your head held high knowing that." That's been the foundation of my work ethos and has stood me in good stead throughout my varied and incredibly interesting work life.
I always give 100%
I agree that nobody can perform at 100% of their ability everyday But I disagree that "whatever you gave today was your 100%" If we are being honest most people will get to the end of the day knowing full well they could have done more (myself included) While you can't "perform" at 100% everyday you can give 100% "effort everyday.
I think people ought to define 100%. That would be healthy. Too many people living into everyone else’s expectations, trying to deliver well beyond 100%. Therefore they burn out, resentment, anxiety, debilitating stress, sickness, etc…
Even Steven Bartlett too?
True! It's okay
