Curl your lashes. Eyes look brighter when lashes are curled because you see more of the whites, says New York City makeup artist Ramy Gafni. Our pick: Revlon Gentle Heat Lash Curler ($10, drugstores), a new, battery-powered wand that uses warmth to create bend.
Or at least curl the corners. If curling all your lashes seems like too much trouble, try getting a wide-eyed look on the outer third with a mini curler. We like Tweezerman Corner Lash Curler ($10, tweezerman.com).
Do push-ups. Press up on the mascara brush as you apply the color from roots to tips to further encourage the curl, says Gafni.
And jiggle, too. Use the zigzag motion favored by makeup pros to saturate all sides of each lash with color. Estée Lauder TurboLash All Effects Motion Mascara ($30, Saks Fifth Avenue) has a vibrating wand designed to mimic this expert move.
Or skip the mascara gymnastics. Apply fake lashes to the outer corners of your eyes instead. Makeup artist Sandy Linter suggests using the "short" or "flare" kind (full lash strips can look too Hollywood for real life). Place the glue on the faux lashes, then stick them against the roots of your natural lashes. Sweep on mascara to blend the falsies with your own. Try Ardell DuraLash Naturals ($4, drugstores).
