On Being a Therapist

I am passionate about my work as a therapist helping children, teens, and their parents overcome anxiety and depression. I am deeply honored that my clients allow me into their lives to help them.

The profound connection that I develop with my clients is one of my greatest rewards in life. I feel fortunate that I can have a job I enjoy so much.

The Importance of Therapist Self-Reflection and Growth

I engage in ongoing personal growth work to ensure that I provide the best service possible to my clients.

Working through my own personal issues has helped me be more empathic with my clients and patient with the process of therapy. Further, it helps me work through my blind spots so that I can be clear and effective with you.

I consider myself to be self-aware. It is not possible to be perfect as a therapist. I accept this truth and use this it to help me continually evolve as a person so that I can continue to grow as a therapist.

My Strengths as a Therapist

I have been described as a warm, approachable therapist. Colleagues and clients often tell me they feel safe and can trust me. My clients also seem to enjoy my sense of humor, which I see as an important tool in my work.

I treat each client as a unique individual, having distinct needs and goals. This means I approach therapy differently depending on you and your situation, always taking your lead on what you want to work on.

Although I am trained in several therapeutic orientations, I only use those most appropriate to you in the moment. Growth and healing can only happen in an environment where you feel respected and safe emotionally so that you can envision your true self and reach your potential.

Teacher and Supervisor of Therapy

I am an Adjunct Faculty Member at The Wright Institute in Berkeley and the California Institute for Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco. I have taught child and adult therapy at clinics and graduate schools throughout the Bay Area.

“John Lundin was a member of my consultation group for years. He is a gifted therapist who combines deep theoretical knowledge with a warm, understanding manner and an engaging sense of humor that puts adults, adolescents and children at ease. I have the utmost confidence in John’s clinical work, and I recommend him highly.”

Speaking Engagements

I have lectured to parents and children in elementary and high schools on topics ranging from grief and loss, depression, anxiety, and psychological obstacles to success. Helping parents and community members better understand the deeper psychological factors surrounding events in themselves and others is rewarding for me, as it can have an impact on the community as a whole.
