Having fun with your hair color is an easy way to change up your look, but dramatic hues like blondes and reds can take a ton of effort. If you're in search of a new style that's not going to require maintenance every six weeks, consider the soft roots trend.

Asking your stylist for roots that softly blend into your hair color is an easy, "color-enhancing beauty hack" that's both versatile and low-maintenance, according to Glamour.

"'Soft roots' keep your roots closer to their natural color," explains Paul Labrecque, master stylist and owner of Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa. The mid-length and ends of your hair can be brighter, but this method reduces the line of your hair's regrowth, making it less obvious that the color needs to be refreshed and minimizes the appearance of grown-out roots overall.

The concept isn't just for blondes and redheads. Any lightened color works well with this technique. (Yours truly has been rocking a broken-up brown root with turquoise tresses for the past two months because, in all honesty, I am super lazy about getting my roots done!)

From personal experience, I can tell you that having a softer root has definitely made my life easier. Gone are the days when procrastinating touchups meant I looked like I had a brown zipper sewn to the top of my head. Soft roots also make salon appointments way less urgent.

The only folks this concept doesn't work great for are those whose hair has gone gray. "If you are covering gray, you may not achieve this look because there could be more of an extreme contrast against any natural white hair at the roots," cautions Labrecque. Otherwise, feel free to get your soft root look ASAP — that way, your hue will look gorgeous all busy holiday season long!
