Rust stains on surfaces can ruin the look of your home. You need to clean them as soon as you spot them to prevent them from getting worse. It may seem like a challenging job to get rid of them, but with the right cleaning tips you can remove them with little effort.

Follow these effective tips to remove those unwanted rust stains from various surfaces in your home.

1) Remove Rust Stains on Floors

First, sweep the area clean to remove surface dirt from your floor. Next, squeeze the juice of 2 lemons into a bowl and use a soft-bristled brush to apply it on the rust stains. Let the acidic juice rest on the stains for 15 minutes. Then, sprinkle baking soda on the stains, over the lemon juice. Finally, scrub the area with a hard-bristled brush. This should lift the stains from the floor.

2) Remove Rust Stains on Metal

Vinegar is an effective natural cleaner and works wonders when it comes to tackling rust stains. To remove rust from small metal items, soak them in a bowl of vinegar. Let them sit in the bowl of vinegar overnight. Next, remove the item and scrub with a metal brush or steel wool. Rinse under water and dry with a towel. If the metal items are too big to fit in a bowl, you can soak a piece of cloth in vinegar and wrap it around the rusted area. Let it sit overnight and then scrub the rusted area clean.

3) Remove Rust Stains on Stainless Steel

While stainless steel is known for its ability to resist corrosion, it’s not fully stain and rust-proof. To clean rust stains from stainless steel items, make a paste comprising 1 tbsp. of baking soda and 2 cups of water. Apply the paste on the affected surface using a soft, clean cloth. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Wipe the mixture using a damp cloth. Next, wash the item using dishwashing liquid. Finally, rinse under water and dry using a clean towel.

4) Prevent Rust Stains

Try to keep metal cans away from your sink, taps, bathtub, etc. to avoid exposure to water. Items like metal jars of shaving cream or any product when kept on a watery countertop, can develop rust. Store them in cabinets.

To avoid the problem of hard water, you may consider installing a water softener or a water filter. It will help purify hard water which will prevent rust. Don’t forget to wipe down your sink, bathtub, etc. after each use. This will help eliminate any hard water residue.

There you go! Follow these simple steps, and you’ll see those unwanted rust stains disappear from any surface, be it your floor, knives, taps or tools.
