Arise, England: Six Kings and the Making of the English State Hardcover – September 17, 2024

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

Pre-order Price Guarantee. Terms
A lively, new and sweeping history of the rise of the state in Plantagenet England.

Between 1199 and 1399, English politics was high drama. These two centuries witnessed savage political blood-letting – including civil war, deposition, the murder of kings and the ruthless execution of rebel lords – as well as international warfare, devastating national pandemic, economic crisis and the first major peasant uprising in English history.

Arise, England uses the six Plantagenet kings who ruled during these two centuries to explore England’s emergent statehood. Drawing on original accounts and arresting new research, it draws resonances between government, international relations, and the abilities, egos and ambitions of political actors, then and now. Colourful and complicated, and by turns impressive and hateful, the six kings stride through the story; but arguably the greatest character is the emerging English state itself.

Dr CMS Catherwood: writer and reader
5.0 out of 5 stars The long wait for this book was utterly worth while
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 13, 2024
Academic in Cambridge have been waiting patiently for two very different works to appear. The first was the James Webb Space Telescope, and when it appeared, the magnificence of photos that came showed that the wait had all been worth while. And then the other big longed-for event came - the final publication of this book, by two of the finest medievalists in Britain. As with the James Webb, this fabulous book on some of our Plantagenet rulers has also been very well worth the wait. The chapter on Edward III is worth the price of the book in itself. And the authors are refreshingly open about where they think that previous historical interpretation has gone wrong, with the two of them making many a convincing revisionist case that changes the view we have of the past. This is history come alive, accessible and as it should be written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing and convincing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 15, 2024
Like many others I’ve been waiting for this for years — in my particular case since I occupied about 8 hours of Dr Burt’s time in 2006 while struggling through my undergrad dissertation on John of Gaunt. Unlike that effort, this was worth the wait. Thorough, rich and lively. Though the degradation of historiographical context in my brain means I can’t offer more than a personal view — but it left me feeling that a new plateau has now been reached for the period. Happily I also genuinely enjoyed reading it.
