This story takes place ninety years ago in a pivotal election year similar to our present situation paralleling the 1932 election year. It is fascinating the historical record reflects certain polices and stances of candidates and parties similar and contra to each other at that time and now. However, the present administration possesses many of FDR’s polices, but more to the left in overdrive. This material presented in this book is not found elsewhere in this framework, especially in high school and in college courses.
In the latter portion of the first third of the book the reader is presented with the repeal of the 18th Amendment of the Constitution effort and the reason for it. The reason for this turn from December of 1917 is very interesting and should be of interest to the reader. The book continues to meander between the political aspects of both candidates, President Hoover and challenger FDR. The book testifies to the contrast between the candidates and their respective parties during the great depression.
Scott Martelle, a journalist, then goes on to provide insight to “a transcontinental hitchhike” of WW I veterans advocating for their promised bonus that never came to them. Their sit-in in DC that summer and the parties conventions are also highlighted with the ensuing election and transition of presidential opponents. His ability to create a synchronous replay of the year, and the forces at play across the nation at that time is compelling.
The book’s text is approximately two hundred and seventy-six pages in twenty chapters and special timelines. It has a table of contents, forty-one pages of sources and note material, many black and white photographs, and a strong index. This is an easy read and is very beneficial to the average American interested in American history. The author’s note at the end is rather interesting.
